Wordpress 2.8.1 Is Out. Upgrade Your Blogs Now!

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi On July - 12 Under Announcements 3 COMMENTS

It hasn’t been long since I updated my blog to wordpress version 2.8 and now wordpress version 2.8.1 is out. Reluctant as I am to upgrade my blog again (I spent 3 hours doing it the last time), I have to because it will fix some problems I’ve been having lately with my dashboard.

Below are the two and only problems I’ve been having with wordpress version 2.8. They’re reportedly said to have been fixed in wordpress version 2.8.1.

  1. My dashboard takes forever to load and zaps too much memory
  2. The theme editor interface simply won’t allow me to edit the files that make up my theme, till I’ve refreshed the page like 20 times. So frustrating.

Other problems said to have been fixed can be found here.

I’m off to upgrade my blog now. Hopefully it will go as smoothly as I think it should.

P.S: If you are sick and tired of receiving alerts in your dashboard that there’s a new version of wordpress available, you should install the plug-in, Disable Wordpress Core Update.

I’m DEFINITELY going to install it on my blog cos each time there’s an upgrade of wordpress and I see the alert, I’m never at peace with myself till I’ve upgraded the blog. (Talk about a compulsive disorder).

Hopefully I’ll only look out for upgrades when I’m in the mood to upgrade.

NOTE: It's *very* important that you keep your WordPress installation(s) up to date. If you don't, your blog or website could be susceptible to security vulnerabilities or performance issues. If you use this plug-in, you must make sure you keep yourself informed of new WordPress releases and update your WordPress installation(s) as new versions are released.

The above is a warning from the team that created the Disable Wordpress Core Update plug-in.

This update actually managed to mess up the database for one of my blogs :(
Luckily had a backup, but lost a few posts on that blog

    • @Alfred: Ouch! That hurts! Were you using core update or automatic update plug-in? I used a new method via http://www.net2ftp.com and surprisingly it worked without a hitch. Will post an article about it when I can. Sorry for your loss. It sometimes happens but then come to think of it, if you made a backup you can still recover the few posts you lost.

The last time I updated to a new version of Wordpress it took a whole day out of my week. Too bad they can't make the version upgrades automatic. Or at least I think it's too bad. One way or the other I suppose there's going to be a time commitment. So I usually wait until I hear really good things about the version upgrade before I commit.
