Joining the dofollow movement could backfire if you choose the wrong plug-in to get the job done.  You could end up with tons of spammy comments or angry commenters who are wondering why some of their links have suddenly gone nofollow again.

Here are my top dofollow plug-ins for avoiding spammy comments, trackbacks and dofollow links gone AWOL.

Jennifer Ray’s Link Love WordPress Plug-in

Link Love WordPress Plug-in: This is the plug-in I’m presently using. What I love about this plug-in is that it dofollows comment author links based on the author’s email address so that no matter what URL or anchor text the author uses, he/she gets his/her dofollow backlink ;-)

It’s simple to configure and you can set how many comments the author must have in other to be dofollowed and you can also blacklist email addresses of past commenters that have suddenly started spamming your blog ;-)

LinkLove

NOTE: To avoid getting penalized by Google, I advise you to visit every link posted on your blog to make sure it ain’t spammy or fishy in nature.

Michele Mariucci’s NoFollow Free Plug-in

NoFollow Free Plug-in: The highlight of this plug-in for me is that it comes with banners that you can display on your site to advertise your participation in the dofollow movement ;-) .

NoFollow Free

Amongst it’s features are:

  1. Ability to set the amount of comments before dofollow is activated.
  2. Ability to remove nofollow from Author Link and Comment text Link or from just one of both.
  3. Ability to blacklist email of possible spammers.

I quit using the plug-in because I noticed that it was only dofollowing author links based on the anchor text.

NOTE: To display the Nofollow Free banner on your blog, you need to add a code after the <body> tag in your header.php: <?php if(function_exists(‘noff’)) { noff(); } ?>

Do not use the code provided in the plug-in setup page as it’s bad and could prevent your blog from loading if you ever deactivate the plug-in.

Kimmo Suominen’s DoFollow 4.0

DoFollow 4.0: A simple plug-in that dofollows every commenter’s link straight away after activation or after some days. Unfortunately you can’t set the amount of comments needed before dofollow is activated.

What I loved about this plug-in was the ability to nofollow all trackbacks and pingbacks as I was getting quite a ton of those @ some point ;-) .

dofollow4.0

So are you a dofollow blogger? What dofollow plug-in do you make use of on your blog? Please feel free to share with us :-) .

  1. My blogs are do-follow and I use the NoFollow Free plugin. It doesn’t have any of the cool features that the three you mentioned does.

I might use one of them as I like the thought of having people comment a certain amount of times.

  2. Thanks you for refering to my plugin, I’ve twitted your article, man :)

  3. there are lots of dofollow plugins in WP, though I’ve only used the common “dofollow” for comments on my blog “kaiserthesage”. I think this will do fine as an additional plugin for my blog. good thing I checked :) but still excited for your wordpress plugins round up. Anyway, I’ll try to add this one. Thanks Udegbunam.

    Regards,
    Jason Acidre

Exactly what I’m looking for! Thanks Udegbunam. I only use semiologic’s dofollow plugin. Do you use all these plugins at the same time?

  5. Saw this post talking about dofollow and thought you would like to know about a new site, Wiki Dofollow. It is a community compiled list of high ranking dofollow sites. That way, the list stays current.

If you want, be one of the first to blog about it. I am sure you know how difficult it is getting visitors to a new site. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks.

  6. I’ve been using CommentLuv, because it allows people to leave two links in the comment box, and not just one. I read recently that removing nofollow on comment links is actually beneficial for blog owners these days because Google now uses the amount of activity your site generates in order to determine where it ranks in the search engines. Seems like removing the nofollow attribute would increase activity and really help blog owners out!

Here’s one on dofollow I found from Semiologic. http://www.semiologic.com/resources/seo/nofollow/

  8. Anybody know anything about Link Love vs, Comment Luv? Is one better than the other, or can you use them both at the same time?

  9. Loan Calulation in Excel says:

A great list, I tried all three but now I’m using Jennifer Ray’s Link Love WordPress Plug-in
I wold like to ask you to add time stamp to posts or comments. that helps to decide if there is newer reviews available.

  10. Very interesting post and interesting plugins… thanks for posting this… definitely good stuff!!! :)

  11. Great information. I’ve been using doFollow plug-ins for a long time and so far so good. For me this the best plug-in to prevent spamming and til now I prefer to use it than other.
