The Safest Way To Tweak Your Wordpress Blog

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi On August - 23 Under Blogging Tips 6 COMMENTS

Some of my commentators have written me with regards to the ever changing configuration of  my blog’s interface. Most of them in general want to know how I do it without ruining my blog

Well, it’s quite simple. Using a software by the name of WampServer, I’m able to install a functional wordpress on my laptop and then modify my theme files and wordpress files as if I deem fit.

Anything that needs to be added to my blog is tested on Wampserver first to make sure it works and second to save me time at the cybercafé trying to figure out where one code will go and where the other shouldn’t.

How To Install Wordpress Locally On Your Computer With Wamp Server written by Amit Banerjee of Ampercent will show how to get started in less than 5 minutes.

Hope you enjoy his tutorial like I very much did.

  1. Installing Wordpress on Local system is always a good advice and I prefer syncing it with my main database and wp-content folder...

Thanks for sharing this tip. It is, indeed, essential to make sure the changes that you are going to make works BEFORE you actually apply them live. What I do is I have a test web server (not self hosted), and I always make changes to the websites hosted on the test web server before I make changes to the real live sites. This includes updating widgets, wordpress version...etc.

This is the sort of thing I need! Thanks! Does it work for other platforms too? For example, an e-commerce platform?

Another software that does similar work is XAMPP. It helps you have a clone version of your blog on a local computer thereby affording you the opportunity of tweaking your blog as if you were working online. I really tweak my wordpress theme nowadays because I consider it time consuming.

    • @NaijaEcash: Tweaking wordpress can be quite consuming but I love it. I spent quite some time tweaking this theme to make it unique from other blogs using the same theme and I think I've succeeded. Right now I'm working on tweaking another theme for my upcoming wordpress blog with Web4Africa.
