Zenith MasterCard WebSurfer: The Graphcard Alternative 
Before I start I did like to make it clear that this post refers to the Mastercard Websurfer issued by Zenith Bank Nigeria. It has nothing to do with how Mastercard Websurfer issued by banks in other countries work as I’m not familiar with any of them.
When I first started out online, I used Graphcard issued Visa Gift Cards to make my online payments but later switched to Zenith Bank’s Mastercard Websurfer.
Priced at $20 a year, the Mastercard Websurfer is used to shop online ONLY. I was skeptical about getting the card as there were loads of rumors of online merchants who didn’t accept credit/debit card orders from Nigeria ( Can you blame them? It’s just unfortunate that the frauds amongst us have wreaked so much havoc online that the innocent ones are left to pay the consequences)
When I did finally make up my mind to purchase the card, it was because of the Cons of Graphcard.
Getting a Visa Gift Card from Graphcard can be quite frustrating to some.
First you have to open an account with their sister company, Virtual Terminal Network after which you are required to load your account with Naira via their account with the ever annoying United Bank Of Africa (UBA). After that you log on back to your VTN account and fill in the details of your deposit from your deposit slip. In about 1 hour or thereabout, if the information you filled in is correct, your account will be loaded minus VTN’s cut for the transaction.
With money in your VTN account, you move on to Graphcard, get an account with them and then proceed to load your account using funds from your VTN account. As soon as this is complete, you will be asked if you want to buy a Visa Debit card. Follow the instructions carefully and your order would be placed in line. In less than 4 hours (as it was in my case) you’ll have the number of your Visa Debit Card together with other relevant info like CVV2 code and expiry date. Graphcard charges $5 per card and their cards are NOT reloadable which is why I switched to Zenith Bank’s Mastercard Websurfer.
NOTE: This card is not attached to an address and most merchants require a billing address before they can process your order. Graphcard suggests you get a virtual address with them and they’ll link it to your card.

Personally, I didn’t get a virtual address. I figured out that since the Visa Gift Card was issued by their company, it would automatically be linked to their company’s address. So whenever I placed an order online with the card I simply used their address as the billing address and it worked every time

The Pros Of getting Graphcard issued Visa Gift Cards are
- Minimum of $25 is what you can buy, if I remember clearly well.
- No yearly fees.
The Cons of getting Graphcard issued Visa Gift Cards are
- It’s not reloadable.
- Too many go betweens (UBA & VTN)
- Not linked to any address
If you plan on getting Zenith Bank’s Mastercard Websurfer do please note the following
- The card is for EXCLUSIVE use on the internet.
- It costs $100 minimum to open plus $20 yearly fee.
- It’s reloadable. Each reloading will cost you $5
- Activation takes 48 hours or less.
The Pros of Zenith Bank’s Mastercard Websurfer include:
- No go betweens as in the case of Graphcard, where you have to go through VTN & UBA before you finally load your Graphcard account.
- Card is linked to the address you filled in your application form.
The Cons of Zenith Bank’s Mastercard Websurfer include:
- If by any chance a transaction is refunded by a merchant, it will take 30 days from day of refund for the funds to be deposited back into your account.
- Some payment processors/merchants like World Pay, don’t accept it. Others that do accept it, might request you send them a scan of the Mastercard Websurfer and also a scan of your international passport or Driver’s license.
- The $100 opening minimum & $20 a year fee might be a bit too pricey for some.
NOTE: If possible ask the merchant if he/she accepts Nigerian Issued Mastercard Websurfer before you order. It so happens that after ordering some merchants, before initiating the verification process, will refund the money back once they see the order is coming from the dreaded Nigeria. Then they’ll ask you to verify your authenticity before they accept your payment. By then it’s too late and you’d have to wait 30 days for your card to reflect the refund. I was a victim with Hostgator.
Due to the high rate of fraud online, I’ll not posting the direct link to their registration page as it might have changed in the past months. Simply go to their Cards Division and get the registration info.

- You could always get to your transaction history via .pdf request and also login online to see your balance.
Zenith WebSurfer is great, but Real MasterCard is better.

I agree but then nigerians have been embarrassed in the past while using Mastercards issued by Nigerian Banks abroad. I’ll stick to the Websurfer for now till I can get a Mastercard from a foreign institution.

Nope! Sorry. Zenith’s Mastercard Websurfer can only be loaded locally @ any branch of Zenith so you can’t use it for Google Adsense

As far as I know, you can’t activate your graphcard account using Zenith’s Mastercard but then again it’s been over 1 year since I transacted with Graphcard and things might have changed.
Zenith Mastercard costs $20/year and minimum of $100 initial deposit. You’ll be charged $5 for subsequent deposits BUT each time you make an order online, you won’t be charged extra by them. I LOVE THE CARD. SIMPLE!

I also got a problem with my Debit Mastercard. It takes almost half the amount I loaded as fees which is unfair coz fees should be less than 20% of the total amount. And their rate from dollar to other currency are not consistent.

For me to be able to help you, you really need to draft your questions well cos I sometimes don’t understand them. Linking your Domicilary account to a GTB MasterCard is quite possible and the last time I checked, it’s the ONLY way of obtaining a MasterCard from GTB. Simply walk into any branch of GTB and ask them about linking your account to a MasterCard.
NOTE: I don’t use GTB MasterCard and some folks have complained that it doesn’t work on certain sites.

Your blog is one of my 2010 discoveries. As regards to hosting with hostgator, I intend going for their VPS plan, but I found out their VPS PLAN does not come bundled with FANTASTICO DE DELUXE. So I thought about getting license from NETENBERG, but don’t know if they accept MasterCard WebSurfer. A little guide would do Bro
Hostgator’s VPS Plan does come bundled with Fantastico Deluxe. When you land on the home page of hostgator, simply click on View VPS Plans. On the next page, under Flexible and Easy to Use Software, click on Cpanel Demo, scroll down the Cpanel demo page to Softwares/Services and you’ll find Fantastico Deluxe. Hope this helps. If you’re still in doubt send them an email and they’ll confirm this.

Jackie, I wish I could help you but I can’t. Coincidentally I just got my GTB Naira MasterCard today and I tried renewing my domain name and was declined. I contacted Netfirms to find out why my card was declined. I’ll possibly stop by the bank tomorrow to find out why as well.

- You don’t need to have a bank account with Zenith.
-The card can ONLY be used online for online transactions. It doesn’t work offline. It was tailored to cater to the needs of folks that want to pay for goods and services online. I’ve used it on Hostgator, SingingSuccess, Netfirms, 4Shared, 2CheckOut and a few ebook orders without problems.
- No you can’t link it to your Graphcard Virtual Address. The card will be linked to your Nigerian address and when placing orders, your billing address has to be set as the exact same Nigerian address you filled in your application form.
- You have to use the billing address with which you applied for the card from Zenith. NOTE: This depends on what security measures the payment processor has in place as some don’t bother checking the billing address @ all while some do.
- I’ve NEVER had to hide my IP address to use the card.
- It’s a DEBIT card.
- Your first deposit is a minimum of $120: $100 goes into the card while $20 covers your yearly fee for maintaining the card.
- Payments are not accepted immediately. As soon as you place your order and it’s accepted by the merchant, Zenith will send you an email requesting that you should confirm that you made that order. This is a nice security measure. As soon as you confirm that you actually made the order, the funds will be released to the merchant. NOTE: In some cases, the merchant may refund your money when he detects that you’re ordering from Nigeria. You’ll have to verify yourself by sending in scanned copies of your international passport and Zenith Mastercard. I only faced this scenario with Hostgator.
- To get the card, you have to present your International passport or Drivers License Only.
- The card will be issued to you on the spot but could take 24 -48 hrs after you fund it for it to be activated. As soon as it’s activated, you will be sent an email with details like Expiry Date, CVV2 code, Online statement log-in details.

I just purchased one but it does not have an expiry date. Why is that.
The expiry date will be included in the activation email that they would send your way. It lasts for one year and then you’d have to renew again for $20.

Generally the conversion rates are fair. Just note that the exchange rate will be set by the payment processor of the merchant in question.
NOTE: If the merchant is using WORLDPAY, don’t bother using Websurfer as it will be declined. I no know wetin be WORLDPAY wahala with Websurfer

I’m not sure about bluehost. I host with Hostgator. With regards to whether the 30 day refund thingy has changed or not. I’m not sure. You’d have to contact their cards services department to verify that. I only advice you to contact bluehost first to find out if they’ll accept your websurfer and if they need stuff like international passport and drivers license before you place your order.

I want to first thank you for the good work you are doing. Since the first time I came accross this blog, I never fail to visit it every day.
I have read all you have said about zenith bank websurfer, graphcard and the rest. Your info really help me to take a final decision on which of the cards to settle on.
I have tried using GTB Debit mastercard without success. The only time i came to near success was when i used it on alibris.com to buy some books. Initially i was happy because everything went well only for me to receive another mail indicating that my order has been cancalled due to technical error and my money immediately credited back to my account. when i probe further on the nature of the tachnical error, i was told that their shipping provider does not ship to Nigeria. What a nonsense.
I have tried using the GTB mastercard and zenith bank visa prepaid card on Ebay, amazon without success. Before i decided to try graph card. I have already paid in money to graphcard account before i discover this site.
The problem with using nigeria cards may not be that of the bank but the country as indicated by alibris.com.
I would like to know if zenith websurfer is accepted in ebay, amazon.

I’ve heard such tales regarding visa cards and gtb’s mastercard. So far so good Zenith’s websurfer hasn’t failed me in any way BUT I’m not sure if it’s accepted by Amazon or Ebay as I’ve NEVER done a transaction with either of the two stores.

NOPE. Actually I quit bothering myself with virtual cards since I stumbled on websurfer.
From what I have read on your blog about zenith websurfer, I am still contemplating whether to try it. What scare me most is the issue of refund – 30 days is just too lonk.
I was able to use GTB naira debit mastercard successfully on selftestsoftware.com – this is the only website where i have recorded success. the last time i used the card in alibris.com to buy some book, my order was cancelled and money refunded within 3 days. You see, zenith 30 days is just too long.
As for the VTN and graphcard, which i have been using so far, if you have a GTB account and subscribe to the internet banking, you can fund your vtn right from the comfort of your home 24/7. It makes the whole thing easier for me.

The last time i called card services, they said it was only valid on a few naija websites such as Virgin, Dana Airways and British Airways.
Yes, i am talking about the GTB Naira Debit Mastercard. I was able to use it on selftestsofware.com and it worked fine.
Even when I used it in alibris.com, it worked but just that they claim they don’t shipped to Nigeria, then my money was refunded within 3 days.
I still have problem with the GTB naira debit mastercard though, cos it did not work on amazon.com.

Bros I just called GTB Customer Care and they confirmed that though the card is not configured to work with international online merchants, it does seem to be working on some sites. I was advised to get a Dollar denominated mastercard instead.
Just to add to the discussions so far, the success of any card used online depends to a large extent on the configuration of the merchant site in which it is used. Various security measures are used to filter incoming transactions and therefore one can’t really be sure which card will work or not.
Some sites use the CVV2 card verification only, some use the CVV2 with billing address verification, some use the 2 + geographic location and others screen every transaction with a blacklist of IPs and countries. There are numerous ways out there used by companies to secure a transaction.
I have used all the 3 cards mentioned in these comments GTB, Zenith & Graphcard, and I believe it is always essential to understand how they all work before trying to use them. It is also important to study your prospective customers to understand what they will also accept.
Our banks are really trying to fix most of our online problems in other to get more sales. But we all know they are not responsible for our present Internet Image. Therefore we all need to fight side by side to redeem and create a new Nigerian Image.
Lastly, I must commend your effort in maintaining such a wonderful blog. I am still going through your content and I think it is wonderful. In due time, I will make some suggestions for topics I think will benefit Nigerians because that is my present goal and can only be achieved if all those Nigerians who have benefited well from Internet Marketing make important contributions to the society.

Some merchants make use of the billing address while some don’t and that’s possibly why the fake US address I used wasn’t detected.

Withe regards getting a websurfer card with an american address, I doubt if it’s possible because you’ll be requested to show your international passport or national id to the bank before the card is issued and I believe that they might want you to to register with a Nigerian address. The best way to clarify this is to get talking with the Zenith Bank customer care reps.

Now that I know where to use the GTB Mastercard, today, i decided to go for the dollar denominated mastercard, just to direct all my online shopping directly to my dom account.

Okay. Four days gone and Facebook is yet to charge my Naira Debit Card. Still waiting to see what the charges will be like.
Be patient, if you did not receive mail from facebook that they could not process ur card, they will definitely take their money.
Right now, about N9k was blocked in my account by mastercard. On enquiry, GTB said I must have done a transaction that is yet to be charged. But for me, i am not aware of such transaction. I have decided to apply wait and see game.
As for your charge, it will come. my sometime take more than 5 days before it reflect in my account.

I forgot to post here GTB response to my enquiry on why my payment in amazon.com was declined. Amazon had informed me that they were unable to process my card as the payment was decline by my bank without any specific reason.

Dont you think some GTB staff are not up to date taking into account being able to use the card on some international websites like facebook, etc?
I got the same response when I called them last week. We can only pray that they unleash it on foreign sites SOON.
I get charged by facebook once in a week. Usually they charge me on a sunday and i spend about $18-$20 weekly.
Wonder if that information helps anybody.

Hello Emmanuel, apart from facebook, have you use zenith websurfer on any other website, like amazon, ebay, etc??
I haven’t used it on Facebook yet. Just Hostgator, Netfirms, SingingSuccess, 4Shared and a few internet marketers.
Ebay only accepts paypal so i don’t know if it is allowed there. Except you are talking about verifying your ebay account with it. I believe it should work for fee payments not for ebay purchases. Though i haven’t tried it yet.
I don’t deal on amazon so i don’t know that too. But i use it on facebook, resellerclub, any website accepting plimus, some times 2checkout.
How far with these payment did your payment go through?
I think the way to use the Zenith Master card is to know the websites that will not accept it.
That way you avoid rejection and having to wait for 30 days to get a refund. Any website that rejects Nigerian issued cards will also reject Zenith Web surfer.

Sorry to hear about your predicament. Hostgator NEVER held my money ransom. The guys in charge of the Websurfer did. Imediately Hostgator detected that I was from Nigeria, they stopped my order, refunded my money and asked me to send in some papers to verify my authenticity.
Once I was approved, they automatically tried charging my card again, unsuccessfully and then they told me that the money was supposed to reflect in my account 3 working days after it had been refunded and if that wasn’t the case, I was to contact my card provider. I contacted Zenith’s Card services and was told that it would take 30 days on their part for the money to reflect. Something about their policy/TOS.
Contact JustHost and ask them if they’ve refunded your money. If they have contact Zenith Card Services.

and since the statement from zenith doesnt carry name and card number, what did you do? and if you werent affected by this how do you advice i go about it?

Simply contact Websurfer to email hostgator and they’ll solve the issue ASAP. That’s how a friend recently solved his own issues
I use to hate Zenith Bank so much in the past but with this web surfer, i am changing my opinion of them. This is the best master card issuing bank in Nigeria. The thing works for me every time.
I should be trying out their Visa Prepaid soon. Hoping that it works even better than the Websurfer

The day I paid, they asked me to send them a copy of the card I used showing my name …..bla bla bla. Am yet to reply sef, how do I cancel? Or is it canceled automatically if I don’t send them the front page of the card?
You could send them an email and tell them that after consulting with me, you realised that you weren’t really in need of their services now thus you want to cancel your order. If in the future, you finally make up your mind proper proper, you will not hesitate to join them

Make sure you send this email as a reply to the one they sent you requesting for your the card showing your name. On the other hand you can still show them the scanned copy of the card while ou cancel it so they don’t feel as though you were trying to scam them in the first place

Facebook doesn’t charge you at once oh! They wait until you’ve spent quite a sum before they charge your card. If your ad is running, then that means that they accepted your card. If you want them to charge you now, stop running your ads.

There is one thing you need to mention here, essential I think. For Zenith Mastercard Websurfer, You said $100 minimum opening, But you did not mention if you can use the $100 or its all (120USD) for Zenith Bank

I tried to use my GTB Naira Mastercard on Hostgator for a reseller, initially i thought my card wont work on their but just want to confirm. Immediately i finished ordering, i received a message from them:
“Oduyemi Oluwashina,
Thank you for your order with HostGator.
We are happy to inform you that your Reseller Account has been configured and is ready for use!….”
They sent all the necessary details fro me to configure my account.
My card has been charged with immediate effect. I was very happy with this until i got this message from them:
“Hello,
Thank you for your order with HostGator.com!
In order for us to continue with the account setup, please respond to this ticket with a scanned copy of a Photo ID such as as a passport, or drivers license. In addition to a photo ID, please include a scanned copy of the credit card that was used in your account purchase (assuming you purchased a hosting account with a credit card). For security purposes you can mask off all the digits of the card number except for the last 4 digits.
We sincerely appreciate your cooperation here, and look forward to working with you.

Right now, about N5k+ was blocked in my account by mastercard. On enquiry, GTB said I must have done a transaction that is yet to be charged of which i believed it was true.
I have sent the necessary info to the Hostgator. I am now enjoying their services.

It works home and abroad but only online. Please note that websurfer is like a virtual plastic debit card. You are better off with the gtb naira mastercard which allows you use offline and online with the exception that it can’t be used for payments on most sites just yet
