A Must Read For Anyone Interested In Making Money Online From Nigeria

Although this post seems to be directed to Nigerians, It is applicable to anyone who wants to make money online (even to aliens in Mars who want to make money on the internet). I have made a few guest posts on Chuk’s blog about ideas and ways to make money online from Nigeria. This post to me, is very basic but discusses an important point one must know and remember about making money online. If I had known it 2 years ago when I started, I would have concentrated my efforts on something that would have paid off by now.

One Of The Biggest Cold Truths About Making Money Online is:

You Have To Sell something.

That is it.

That is all this post is all about. If this is all you learn from this post then you have learnt something great.

You just have to sell something. (And I don’t care if you are selling periwinkle online). Selling has a lot to do with having a business or getting paid for something (Commerce).

I told you it would be basic.

But do not be deceived by the simplicity of this information.

It is what many people are doing wrong.

Let me ask you a simple question.

What are you selling right now on your blog?

Or if you are just starting out..

What are you planning to sell later on your blog or website?

If you give me that “I don’t know look” and is clueless about the answer, then you have a problem.

A big problem.

But I know….

One fellow might quickly say…Mk Akan, you are an ignorant bloody liar, what about those folks making money from Google adsense and other ways online that does not involve selling , are they not making money?

Well, I will quickly reiterate my answer by saying again:

“Anyone who makes money online is selling something”

Take it or leave it.

Anyone making money online is either selling a service or a product. But the bottom line remains, you need to sell something.

And that settles it.

If you want it make money online, find something to sell, or find something you will sell later.

Like I said, this may sound very basic but believe me it is the truth..

Different Ways And Things People Are Selling Online To Make Money.

When you paste Google adsense on your blog or website to make money online, you are selling the white space on your blog or website. (SO TRUE. It’s like selling advertising space but instead of getting paid monthly, you get paid per click or per thousand impressions)
When you promote affiliate products you are selling something.
When you sell your products like e-books, softwares and applications, you are obviously selling something.
When you promote a service, you are selling something.
When you create and promote a service, like the blog set up service created by Chuks, you’re selling something.
When you start a consulting service you are selling something

And the list goes on.

"Selling something online" is the reason why Daren Rowse of Problogger.net once said he only started making money on his blog when he took his blog as a business.

But Does everyone making money online sell stuff?

Although I have said that anyone making money online is selling something, it is realistic to say that I do believe in the exception rule (I just coined that I don’t know is there any phrase like that) .There may be other ways of making money online, like asking for donations etc.

But don’t forget selling something online is the basic way money is made but there are different variations of that business model.

If you really want to make money online think of what you can sell. Think of what people can pay you for (directly or indirectly). Think of what can initiate some form of payment directly or indirectly to you.

Learn about how to sell (marketing). Learn how to influence people to buy.

Making money online involves selling a product or service (this does not necessarily mean you own product or service. It could be affiliate marketing)
Making money online is like having an offline business sometimes, so you have to treat it as such.
Making money online is easier when you are solving peoples’ problems or fulfilling their desires

NOTE: Allow me to “derail” a little. The obsession with Payoneer Prepaid Debit MasterCard and Verified PayPal Merchant Accounts has got to STOP. Nigerian “gurus” are making millions off you via these obsessions. You don’t need either of both to succeed in making money online as more legit companies are now offering payment via bank checks and wire transfer and even Western Union.
Of recent, one of you confirmed the fact the one can not use a Payoneer card for any transaction UNTIL it has been funded via the company through which the card was issued.
Example: If you ordered for a Payoneer Debit MasterCard from LimeExchange, you cannot use the card anywhere online or offline UNTIL you receive @ least one payment from LimeExchange via the card. So in other words, if you concentrate on Nigerian related industries and niches, it will be easy for you to rank and make impact.

For example, fashion is a big category, but Nigerian fashion for women between 16 and 30 is a very specific niche.

Online games is a large category, but online games for adults, between 18 and 30, who want to increase their IQ is a niche.

Weight loss is a large niche, but weight loss for children under the age of 10 is a specific niche.

Having this in mind, let’s continue.

Nigerian movies are very popular now and there seems to be a few websites and blogs covering Nigerians films and movies thus you can start a niche blog about Nigerian movies. You will need to build it to grow and compete with the other established ones.

If you work in a video store or cinema that sells or shows Nigerian movies and your written English and ability to spot a good or bad movie are quite good, this is just the perfect niche for you .

Steps To Take In Starting A Niche Blog On Nigerian Movies

First find out if people are interested in the topic or content that you will be giving out in that niche. (Even without doing a Google search, I already know that Nigerian Movies are hot online ’cause of Nigerians living in the Diaspora )

Go to www.google.com to see if the keywords or niche has adverts displayed when people search for the terms
Go to Google keyword tool and check for the number of searches made around the Nigerian movie industry.
Visit Google trends to know if interest in the subject is dwindling or growing
Pick one of the keyword or phrase that is widely searched for and has less competition and buy a domain name using it. For example , I may buy a domain named titled www.NigerianMoviesReview.com or www.NigerianMoviesHQ.com or any other domain names that has the highly searched and less competitive keyword

Start adding content to the blog and promoting it by commenting and other link building methods

How To Sell A Blogger Blogspot Blog Without Hassles

Folks who make money online via Flippa can testify that site flipping is one hell of a lucrative business if you know just how to go about it.

Unfortunately this e-book doesn’t focus on selling free blogs such as those hosted on the blogger platform, which many have assumed cannot be sold. So without much ceremony, here’s how to sell a blogspot/blogger blog without much stress.

STEP 1: Acquire a great domain name: Since Google says you don’t really own their platform and as such can’t sell any blog hosted with them, you’ll need to move away from blogger to self-hosted wordpress keeping in mind to pick a quality domain name. Once you’re done installing wordpress, do please make sure that your permalink structure is set to /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%.html as this is blogger’s default permalink structure.

STEP 4: Log-in to your wordpress dashboard and start importing your blogger blog by following the steps below

You’ll need to authorize wordpress to access your Blogger blog account

Once you’ve granted WordPress access to your Google-Blogger account, you’ll be presented with all the blogger blogs registered under that account. Simply find the blog you’d like to import and click the magic button, import, then sit back and relax.

After a few minutes or so, depending on how large your blogger blog is, you’ll receive a notification showing that all posts have been imported as shown in the images below,

NOTE: This importing feature doesn’t import your blog post images. They’ll all still be hosted on Blogger. I’ll advice you move all the images one by one to your wordpress installation, if you don’t have tons of blog posts. If you do have tons of blog posts with tons of images I suggest, you just let blogger host them for you

STEP 5: This is the final step. You’ll need to redirect your blogspot blog together with all the posts to your new domain. WebUpDate has got an excellent guide on redirecting blogger blogs to self hosted wordpress blogs.

NOTE: Once the 301 redirects have been properly set. You need to wait like a month or two for Google to update their system with the new URLs. Under no condition must you change permalink structure again as doing so will render any link you have lying around the web useless.
Also expect some probable drop in PR which is brought on by the 301 redirects. This PR decay shouldn’t bug you much as it really doesn’t affect your traffic.

STEP 6: Go sell your blog now with ease

The competition can be FIERCE especially with products that have a high conversion rate. These products are practically been pitched by every Tom, Dick & Harry and few of the ones that make sales are actually pitching the product to the thousands of subscribers on their email-list which you as a newbie to internet marketing or making money online (as the general population calls it) may not have. The very minute one of your loyal readers puts his/her trust in you and buys the product only to find out, down the line, that it’s whack, you’re finished. One disgruntled reader/customer expresses his/her dissatisfaction at your recommendation of such a product and other readers stop paying attention to you & your blog entirely. In this case scenario, you’ve might have lost out on hundreds or thousands of dollars for a few quick sales.

Can Nigerians Really Make Legit Money Online?

Before you start, let me warn you, this is a very long post. But you will enjoy it.

A lot of Nigerians (some people I know) wonder and even argue with me. They don’t really believe Nigerians can make money online. “There are too many negatives working against us” they say.

But you, yes you reading this post now. What do you believe?

What People Think

Some foreigners may think we only scam people (when I mention that I am a Nigerian on yahoo chat, people scram like I’m some demon not knowing if I have something that may change their lives forever). They are scared of being scammed (not knowing that Nigeria is just 3rd after the US and UK on the scam list).

But that is not the issue.

The issue is you, what do you believe?

I know the usual excuse.

We can’t register

· On PayPal

· On ClickBank

· On Amazon

· On eBay

· We can’t buy online

· we can’t do this, we can’t do that

Blah, blah, blah…

NOTE: Nigerians can actually register @ Amazon and can shop online;)

These are all genuine excuses to those who don’t know otherwise. These are all constraints we all face but it is nothing compared to what this lady, Ladan Lashkari faced. She succeeded against all odds.

And guess what?

We don’t really need all these companies "who are booting us out" to succeed

We can do just fine without them?

In fact if registering with these companies guaranteed success online, every American with a PayPal account and access to all other services would be millionaires, but we all know this is not the case.

My Absolute Belief Is …

Nigerians (and anyone living anywhere on this earth) can make money online.

We will make money online if we can create value. Value creation is a must.

So How Can Nigerians Make Legit Money Online & Offline?

Like I said, it starts with creating value for others. Have you heard the saying "value begets value" ?

So what the hell is value?

My personal definition of value is …something other people consider important and useful enough to trade something in exchange for it (it doesn’t always have to be money; value is not only measured in cash).

Here is one of the definitions of value in Wikipedia.

So the question is – what something can you create or do that someone else can exchange for something? Something people can pay for.

A.KA. What product or service can you provide?

And don’t think you have no product or service…it is right there, you may not be seeing it yet.

NOTE: If you read this blog consistently, you are exchanging your time for the value of the knowledge gotten from the posts on this blog? This blog is creating value for you. This is an example.

The basic truth is, for you to make any form of income online (and even offline), you have to create value, something someone else considers important and useful, which is usually a product or service.

Just take a cue from the biggest names online. The A-list bloggers, the online companies etc all have only one secret-

‘They create products and services people consider valuable and would exchange their time or money to get or use”.

That is the koko…

If you get nothing else from this post…just remember that last point.

Now let’s take it back home.

What value can we “Nigerians” create for other Nigerians or for the world at large?

This is the question we should ask ourselves when we get online. This is what will bring in the money. This is how we can "hammer without the fear of EFCC". (Hammer = Hit big time)

And guess what, there are so many products and services Nigerians can provide to the world.

Let’s do a brainstorm.

First, let’s ask some questions that will spring up some ideas.

1. What do people want to learn about Nigeria and Nigerians?

2. What do you know that other people want to learn in other lands?

3. What are Nigerians known for?

4. What do people love about Nigeria or Nigerians?

5. What do people hate about Nigeria or Nigerians?

Here Are Some Ideas?

1. Do people want to learn how to cook Nigerians dishes?

Can you package a product or service that can help people with this?

2. Do people want to learn how to speak Pidgin English?

Can you help them with that, an e-book or service that creates learning value?

3. Do people want to know Nigerian names and their meanings?

Can you produce a manual for that?

4. Do people want to learn how to dress like Nigerians?

Can you create a product or service from this?

5. Can you produce something valuable on how people can make Nigerian fashion designs and style?

Just think about it, there are hundreds of things people want, like or hate already about Nigeria that we as Nigerians can make a product or start a service around.

These ideas can come in the form of a blog or website.

Please, the above points are just random ideas…you need to do research to know the actual demand, competitions and other business related stuffs for every idea you come up with.

Summary /Conclusion

1. Change your believes, Nigerians and anyone can make money online

2. You don’t really need PayPal and the rest to succeed (believe me)

3. Value creation is the starting point of making money online

4. People make money online by selling products and services (Google Adsense is very slow and requires too much traffic)

5. Nigeria has so many things liked and hated by people that can bring ideas for products and services

6. You may need research and business analysis to finally decide on an idea

Finally, I will be very frank with you, making legit money online is not magic. It takes knowledge, smart work and hard work . Sometimes, hard work similar to the 9-5 jobs (at least at the beginning).

You will need to learn, learn some more, practice, and fail a lot. There is too much to learn.

I personally don’t even know 1/20^th of what I need to know yet. I still learn practice and fail everyday.

Facebook Naira Free Report Analysis

Few weeks back, Nigerian internet marketer, Ogidi Patrick (“Nigeria’s No. 1 Facebook Wealth Expert”) launched what is an IM product he calls Facebook Naira. As always I was skeptical about it because most of the new IM products around now are just rehashed and over hyped IM products.

Unfortunately this one failed to impress me and I stumbled on something fraudulent within.

The first half of this report by the title of, Make Money on Facebook 1: Pay Per Join; was just another way of getting referrals to surveys programs etc via Facebook.

Unfortunately some of the sites he listed have been tagged scam by quite a lot of peeps on the internet. Take for example, Affiliano (As at the time of publishing this post, the site was unavailable, so I could only access the Google cached page.)

Boasting of commission rates of up To $4.00 Per Referral, what happens behind the scene is that this company actually makes money via your signing up for Hostgator and Hostmonster hosting and then pays you from their commission.

Research via the great Google, shows that Affiliano works by allowing you to sign up free of charge then suggesting you set up an affiliano affiliate website using web hosting from Hostgator or Hostmonster. Once you set up your website, you start promoting it and getting referrals using your referral links. Your referrals are also expected to do the same thing (Buy web hosting, setup an affiliate website and get more referrals).

Please note two things: To be paid, your referrals MUST buy hosting from Hostgator or Hostmonster and You have to use their own links (affiliate links of course).

Make Money On Facebook 2: My Idea Cash Business [MIMC] which is the second half of the report is all about setting up a Facebook Fan page and having your fans list what problems they have such as how to make money online, staying healthy, getting a visa etc.

You dedicate a little bit of time to finding solutions to their problems and in return you get paid a token fee for your trouble.

As I rounded up my perusal of this free report, I detected something funny in his “alleged” bank account statement shown below. This is part of his earnings in 5 days after launching a paid report on UK Scholarship Opportunities.

I knew I had seen this exact bank statement on another free report by Kenneth Ifeanyi, another Nigerian internet marketer, and thus I proceeded to search my inbox for the report. After 15 minutes, I prevailed.

Below is Kenneth Ifeanyi’s bank statement from the Profit Leakage free report. Please note that his account number has been cut off unlike in the image above and the red warning is also absent.

The above problem is something that is killing the Internet Marketing industry. People just go about laying false claims to huge affiliate earnings, google adsense earnings and what have you, all with the intention of getting unsuspecting folks to buy their wonder e-books/softwares.

NOTE: The bank account clearly belongs to Kenneth Ifeanyi as shown @ the end of his sales copy @ Sucking Cash Income.

To all Internet Marketers who engage in stuff like this, do please STOP treating your customers like they are dumb. Not everybody is dumb and naive and you’re just ruining a lucrative business model for the honest folks.
