Yay, I’m the one that offered a solution. :)

Thanks so much for the link luv.

  2. And technically, I started the debate – Hesham just took it up a notch and veered off in another direction! (Provocateur that he is.) Thanks for the mention, Udegbunam. I appreciate it.

    • Oops! My bad. ;) . From where I was standing, the whole setup was the other way round. Anyway doesn’t really matter. Everybody got his/her views across.
Thanks for stopping by and you’re very much welcome ;)

  3. Exactly! I was laughing when I wrote that, you know. Being a mom, it just struck me funny to say “I started it!” when it’s usually “but HE started it!”

  4. BTW, I like your notice: “By submitting a comment here you grant this site a perpetual license to reproduce your words and name/web site in attribution. If you’re not cool with this, please DO NOT submit your comment. Thank you!” Reasonable, clear, properly placed, and not over-reaching.

    • Thank you. I was actually telling Sire that I already had a comment license on my blog when he pointed out that there was still a loop hole in my license thus I came up with the If you’re not cool with this, please DO NOT submit your comment part. I guess that debate you guys worked up really did work it’s magic. Hopefully other bloggers will pay attention to this whole “making money off comments” thing.

  5. I don’t mind the fact that comments contribute to a blog’s value and the blogger’s bottom line. Not at all. My only objections, really, are as follows:

    - Bloggers assuming they “own” my comments. I grant an implied (perpetual) license to display. To quote within the doctrine of “fair use.”

    - Bloggers assuming it’s okay to MODIFY my comments (to edit and change the meaning or context, to badly edit spelling or grammar, or to create a “derivative work” by adding links that may appear to readers as if I were making an endorsement when, in fact, I’m not)

    - Bloggers making unreasonable and/or sneaky changes to this implied license; here, you have (a) made a reasonable and clear claim to a perpetual license to display my comment; (b) provided prominent notice right above the submit button to alert me.

Now, that said, I really don’t want to have to read a whole bunch of different terms on every blog and agree to them in order to comment. Copyright law is just fine by me, and shouldn’t be modified willy-nilly by every blogger, IF they want people to comment.

    • I always make sure to credit my commentators whenever I make use of some comment they leave on my blog and I’m TOTALLY averse to MODIFYING comments to transmit messages other than that intended by the commentators.

All comment modification done here @ my blog are done, to fix some spelling and grammatical errors and to put the first letters of the commentators names in capital letter (I’ve got some kind of obsession with names starting in capital letter ;) ). Other than these, I delink or delete comments which are simply not abiding by my comment policy.

In a way, you really can’t blame bloggers and their comment policies. Everybody’s just looking to save themselves a potential lawsuit. ;) . At least mine ain’t tiring to read. Just 2 lines of text. LMAO.
