What’s the use of a business website if no one is looking at the content or even visiting the site.
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is simply the act of manipulating the pages of your website to be easily accessible by search engine spiders so they can be easily spidered and indexed. It’s the technique of tweaking your website so that its ranking increases in search engine databases. As an online business, some of your customers will come from search engines so SEO is needed in other to make your site appear in search engine results.
There are quite a number of business offering to help with SEO but they sometimes cost a lot. If you are not the lazy type, I advise you do SEO for your website on your own. There’s no rocket science to it at all.
Some folks claim to know how search engine works, but it’s a known fact that from time to time search engines like Google change the algorithm with which they rank sites but there are certain SEO tips that NEVER go out of fashion.
Below are a few SEO Tips
- Keyword Domains: I’ve discussed this already in my post Four Powerful Features of a Good Domain Name.
- Keyword Content: NEVER publish your website without including keywords in every page of the site. Most Web editors have this feature. If yours doesn’t make sure to include this code in your pages after the <head> tag and before the </head> tag: NOTE: Replace xxxx with your keywords. <meta name=”keywords” content=”xxxxxxx, xxxxxx, xxxxx”>
- Keyword Page Names: In this case you ought to make sure that the name of the pages on your site have your keywords. For example the keyword of your page is make money online, your page name should be www.yourwebsite.com/make-money-online.html
- Keyword Categories: Most sites/blogs have categories under which are pages pertaining to that category. Your goal is to make sure that you include the keyword of the pages in your category, in the name of that category. For example, if you sell designer products, our URL for sunshades could be www.yoursite.com/cheap-designer-sun-shades/prada.html. In this case cheap-designer-sun-shades is the name of your category and also the keyword of the page Prada.html.
- Keep away from extra layers in your site: The further away a page is from the root of site, the less importance search engines attach to it. Take for example the following examples: http://www.strictlyonlinebiz.com/blog/make-money-online/the-unrevealed-dark-side-of-cpa-marketing and http://www.yourwebsite.com/blog/make-money-online/tips/online-surveys/nigerian-online-surveys . The second link has got 5 layers while the first has only 3 layers which makes it more search engine friendly.
- Do not use dynamic pages: Have you ever noticed URLs that have question marks and numbers for page names like https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=64886&cbid=1tfpe?9z4jum9m&src=cb&lev?=answer ? Well search engines don’t like this type of pages and it sure makes them reduce your page rank. If you own a wordpress blog, you could remove dynamic page naming by activating Custom Structure setting in your Permalinks section

I agree that search engines changes the algorithm so often and as SEO specialist we should be very flexible in promoting our website. It is also advisable to continue learning the SEO process so that our website is updated for the latest SEO trend.

the most important thing when doing search engine optimization is get a good amount of backlinks first. when you have a sufficient amount of backlinks, then you can start optimizing in page links, keyword density and other factors which affects your ranking.
