PPC Classroom 2.0 Module 3: Direct Linking, Landing Pages and Your Own Affiliate Site.

Direct linking is simply PPC without a landing page. In this scenario, when the prospective customer clicks on an ad he/she is immediately taken to the Merchant’s site.

A Landing page is simply a page/site on a particular product that’s made up of the benefits and features of the product and an order button that leads the prospective customer to the Merchant's site were the sale would be completed.

Anik Singal & Amit Mehta insist that landing pages are better than direct linking because Google has introduced the one URL per search result page rule because it (Google) discovered that when most search engine users type in search terms, they sometimes get ads from affiliates linking to the same URL and on clicking these ads they most times landed on the same page over and over again.

Now with the one URL per search result page rule, if there are 15 affiliates with the same website URL only one of them would appear on the search results page.

This simply creates a lot of competition especially for those promoting Click Bank’s top ten offers.

A common trick around the one URL per search result page is getting a cheap domain name and using a frame redirect on it. When properly configured, your ad will show the cheap domain name you acquired but when the customer clicks on the ad he/she will be redirected to the Merchant’s site.

Amit Mehta suggests you use this technique only to test if certain offers are profitable. Under no condition should you use it on long term basis as you risk getting slapped by Google.

You can do well with direct linking if

  1. You focus on less saturated offers/products thereby reducing your competition.
  2. You focus on using long tail keywords (Keyword phrases containing 4 – 6 words)

The pros of direct linking include:

  1. Fast and easy setup because you don’t have to worry about landing pages
  2. Learn the ropes of PPC affiliate marketing faster by going through so many campaigns.
