With the boom of the “make money online” fever, most Nigerians are now seeking an online presence via the creation of personal blogs and websites. Even most offline establishments are now seeking to reach out to more customers via company websites and so quite a number of Nigerian Web Hosts are coming up.
Having stayed out of the country for like 7 years, I’m not a huge fan of anything Nigerian cos they always lack in the customer service and service delivery department which is why I didn’t hesitate to host my first make money online blog with Hostgator.
Being a solid US based company, I know I’ll always get the best from them and DEFINITELY get compensated should something go wrong on their end with their services. The only CON of hosting with them is that like other foreign web hosts, they charge in US Dollars which is why most Nigerians would rather buy web hosting from Nigerian Web Hosts instead of going through the hassles of getting foreign exchange and in turn buying a Visa or MasterCard. Check out my review of MasterCard WebSurfer & Graphcard.
Before I proceed to list the Top 5 things to look out for when buying web hosting from Nigerians, I’d like to let you in on something very IMPORTANT.
“Most Nigerian Web Hosts Are Simply web Hosting Resellers”
Now the question arises, “Who Is A Web Hosting Reseller?”
A Web Hosting Reseller is one who buys server space and bandwidth from a big web hosting company like Hostgator and resells it in bits to various customers to make more money.
Some of you might ask why I feel or say most Nigerian Web Hosts are resellers, well I say so because the severely epileptic power supply in all parts of Nigeria is ABSOLUTELY not conducive for running a web hosting business. It would require loads of diesel to keep the generators and servers in turn running smoothly 24/7.
Check out my article, Make Money Online Reselling Web Hosting for more information on web hosting resellers.
Here goes:
Top 5 Things To Look Out For With Nigerian Web Hosting Services
- Storage/Hosting Space: The amount of space you’ll need will depend on if you intend hosting a blog or running a website. For a website, I’d stick to a minimum of 100MB and for a blog I’d stick to a minimum of 1GB (1000MB). Beware Of Unlimited Storage!
- Traffic/Bandwidth: So far so good my blog Strictly Online Biz is yet to pass 1GB of bandwidth usage in a month since it was launched so I guess a minimum of 1GB of bandwidth monthly is okay. NOTE: You may need more bandwidth if your site/blog uses a lot of flash and images as these contribute heavily to bandwidth consumption each time someone accesses your site. Beware Of Unlimited Bandwidth! Such simply doesn’t exist and the good companies will ALWAYS include a clause in their Terms Of Usage explaining in detail what they actually mean by UNLIMITED. That’s why I love HostGator for keeping it real.
- MySQL: This is the database language used by almost every web hosts and it is needed to run certain server scripts. A minimum of 5 MySQL Databases is okay. You’ll be needing these databases to install softwares like WordPress which is the most popular self hosted blogging platform around.
- PHP & Perl : Used to install certain programs like WordPress or Fantastico Deluxe’s PHPB Forums & send emails. You need to make sure you’re getting @ least PHP/Perl Version 5.
- Cron Jobs: Cron allows you to schedule tasks or jobs to be run automatically at regular intervals. This comes in handy if you are running a server based autoresponder. Cron jobs can save you a bundle of time and money by helping you to automate your website.
- Customer Service: I just added this off the top of my head cos it’s what frustrates me with Nigerian companies. They RARELY apologize and make up for their fuckups. (Forgive me the foul language). From the Telecom firms like MTN down to Internet Service Providers and small businesses. Their services could down for a while making you lose money and in the end you’re never compensated. There’s really nothing you can do with respect to this. You are practically at the mercy of Nigerian Web Hosts. Consumer Protection is so non-existent in Nigeria.

Best of luck in finding the right Nigerian Web Hosting Company for your online business.
P.S: With regards to Customer Service as written above, sometimes the GENUINE Nigerian Web Host might not be able to help you out because the problem could be from the big companies that are selling to them. When such problems arise, all you have to do is be patient and pray the issue gets resolved quickly.
Finally Most Nigerian Web Hosts will NEVER reveal to you if they are Web Hosting Resellers. So don’t bother asking and keep it in the back of your mind that “Most Nigerian Web Hosts Are Simply Web Hosting Resellers”.

Well, that’s the truth of the matter, there is honestly no other way to keep it real. Even though it tells on the ego of every Nigerian Host but the realities still remains the fact; I heard “Dunlop” ran away to Ghana due to “poor power supply”, is their anything to cover in that? We have all resulted to “I better pass my neighbour” haven’t we? Is there a secret in that too?
Well for the hosts, I don’t see any reason for shying away from admitting that they are actually resellers. After all, they are in business to make profit and if they can do better as a “Hosting Reseller” than as a “Host”, then it does makes a good business sense to rather be a “Hosting Reseller”.
Very many clients doesn’t care much that a Nigerian Host is a reseller, all they need is 100% value for their money.
Hey! Chuks, keep on keeping it real!
You hit the mark, bro. Nigerians don’t care if you’re a reseller or not. Just be able to deliver 120% and you’ll become the go to guy of all web hosting resellers.
Some piss me off with their claims of not being web hosting resellers when a little snooping around the net reveals otherwise
well said! but i hope we ain’t all been knocking em hard a little too much of late…

Hmm! If we’ve been knocking them hard lately, maybe soon they would sit up and aim for global brand status via quality customer service/care.
Some make the sad mistake of buying servers from average web hosts only to end up with plenty of down time, server glitches and angry customers ;-(
Hostgator is the best webhost imho, don’t dave at the wrong end, SY

Yes it can really be annoying, claiming of not being a web hosting resellers, when actually that’s the case, forgetting that nothing is hiding “as long as it’s on the World Wide Web”
your points are very true..the problem of power may not really let true Nigerian hosting companies strive…customer care is another big issue.
i am currently using a Nigerian hosting reseller company with good a good support service…just check www.syskay.com.
