Beware Of Internet Dating and Email Scams PLEASE!

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi On February 8, 2010 14 COMMENTS

Earlier this evening, I was reading the dailies when I came across news of a victim of yet another "internet dating scam". As fate would have it this time around, it resulted in the death of the victim, a 58 year old lonely divorcee by the name, Philip Hunt.

For some reason (Greed cannot be excluded), people still fall for these scams which reports show are spreading far and wide outside Nigeria which is sometimes claimed to be the source :( .

I’ve decided to share a few of such scam emails for those of you who might NEVER have come across such emails. Read, digest and stay ALERT!

From Chris and Joy Children of the late former director of finance,Chief Williams Amata of Sierra-Leone, diamond and mining corporation.

CONFIDENTIAL

Dearest,

I am Chris Amata the only son of late former director of finance,Chief Williams Amata of Sierra-Leone, diamond and mining corporation.I must confess my agitation is real, and my words is my bond, in this proposal.

My late father diverted this fund acquired from the over influencing of price of les/purchasing of raw materials, now he has deposited the money with a BANK here in Abidjan BY FIXE DEPOSIT FORM,and he attached a strict clause to the fund in bracket(PAY AS RECEIVED), where I am residing under political assylum with my younger sister Joy.

Now the war in my country is over with the help of ECOMOG soldiers, the present government of Sierra Leone has revoked the passport of all officers who served under the former regime and now ask countries to expel such person at the same time freeze their account and confiscate their asset, it is on this note that I am contacting you, all I needed from you is to furnish me with your bank particulars:

1) Account name(2) Account number (3) Bank address, telephone and fax number For you to assist me transfer this money in your private bank account, the said amount is (Twenty seven Million Dollars) $27 Million.

I am compensating you with 15% of the total money amount, now all my hope is banked on you and I really wants to invest this money in your country, where there is stability of Government, political and economic welfare.

Honestly I want you to believe that this transaction is real and never a joke. My late father Chief Williams Amata gave me the photocopies of the certificate of deposit issued to him by the BANK on the date of deposit, and he called me closer to his bed side before his call to glory(R.I.P)that i should pray to God first, before contacting any foreginer and he warned me strictly that I should avoid african men with their greedy and evil mind since this is the only legacy we are inheriting from him.

Please, this is for you to be clarified because, I do not expose myself to anybody I see, I believe that you are able to keep this transaction secret for me because this money is the hope of my life, it is important.

Please reach me immediately after you must have gone through my message fill free and make it urgent, That is the reason why I offered you 15% of the total money amount, and 5% maped out, in case of any other necessary expenses you might incure during this transaction inluding your telephone calls.

N:B,
Try and negotiate for me some profitable blue chip investment oportunities which is risky free which I can invest with this money when it is transferred to your account and you will be our guiardian, personally I am interested in estate management and hotel business, please advise me.reach me back immediately ou receive this message for more explanation.

And promise me and Joy my younger sister to be a father considering our situation and not to betray us.

Thanks and God bless
Best regards
CHRIS AND JOY AMATA.

  3. Leke from NaijaComputers says:

I get this kind of email periodically. I just received one this morning. The sender claimed to be working for a bank in Ghana. I don’t pay attention to the gimmicks because I have always believe that there is no free lunch anywhere.

Like Tinh said, if those emails were real, I should be richer than Bill Gates by now. It takes a greedy person who wants to sow where he or she did not reap to fall victim. Thanks for the information.

    • They almost got me once when I got an email claiming I had won the UK lottery. I was excited as the year before I had been in London for summer hols and had played the lottery too. I was asked to scan and send my ID card (I sent them the one the Cuban Government had issued us as temporary residents) which I did and they even sent me a certificate and all that to prove the money was mine.

The bubble burst when I was asked to send them money via Western Union so they could commence the procedure of wiring my winnings to me since I was no longer in London. Men, I was so PISSED to think I had almost been DUPED! Thank God, I didn’t make the mistake of scanning and sending them my international passport. Lord knows what scams they might be carried out with my identity. :(

  4. Leke says:

Thank God you didn’t send them your international passport. You would have become an identity thief victim. Just try to imagine all the evil they will attempt to perpetrate with your identity. You may actually have become a suspect for crimes you knew nothing about.
It is always good to be extra cautious when dealing with people online.

    • Let’s just say that incident alone upped the level of my pre-existing paranoia when dealing with individuals online/offline. I’m just grateful to God it didn’t take the wrong direction. I would probably have made the F.B.I’s Most Wanted List. LOL

  5. John from Mormon Secrets says:

It is pretty shocking that people still fall for these, considering that most are almost identical to what they were 5-10 years ago. But I guess there are a lot of unsuspecting people out there and always good to have a reminder to play it safe online.

That’s too bad you didn’t actually win the UK lottery. :)

  6. Lazy Girl says:

The death of the poor man is horrible! While I think the best defense to being scammed is plain old common sense (and some knowledge), sadly if you’re in an emotionally vulnerable place, it’s all too easy to believe in this stuff. So I can understand how they got to him.

  7. Dannie Balestrieri says:

Your site is certainly among the most reliable sources for information about foreign dating that I’ve ever read. Thank you for taking the effort to to explain the details about this situation . I would really appreciate it if you could possibly answer a few of questions: First, how stressful is it to get a visa for a eye-catching international bride? I think I will probably take the plunge and visit Kiev. Those sexy Ukrainian mail order brides are just so awesome! Which foreign dating agency is your special favorite?

  8. Cupid says:

yes, internet dating scams are there.Last week, someone sent me emails said they see my pictures on a dating site, and they want to be my friends.I checked that site and don’t know it before. That’s a scam, they want me to register at that site.
