Top 50 Mistakes To Avoid When Building Your Website
Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi on July - 14 - 2010

If you’ve finally made up your mind to take your offline business online or start a new business venture online, you’ll be needing a quality domain name and web hosting.
With so many web hosting offers out there, you’d be tempted to go for the cheap offers so as to minimize your business expenditure but this could backfire, if you fall into the wrong hands.
This is one of Daniel Scocco’s Top 50 mistakes to avoid when building a website.
As it is with most of Daniel’s free reports, the info contained within is straight to the point and holds very true.
This 26 paged free report covers six important aspects which cannot be under-rated when making a blog or website that’s intended to leave a lasting impression on visitors looking for quality information.
These important aspects of building a solid website are:
- Domain Name Mistakes
- Web Hosting Mistakes
- Web Design Mistakes
- Usability Mistakes
- Search Engine Optimization Mistakes
- Monetization Mistakes
My biggest mistakes on this blog are Opening New Browser Windows and Not Changing Color of Visited Links.
I’m quite used to adding the target=”_blank” attribute to my internal links in hope that my readers will stay longer here. I assumed there was no harm in opening a new tab for each post on my blog. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of one ugly truth until now.
Opera 10 and Firefox seem to be the only browsers that open links with target=”_blank” attribute in a new tab. Other browsers such as Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari open such links in a new browser window instead and this can be so frustrating even for ME!
I’m presently looking for a hack to over-ride all my target=”_blank” attributes BUT first I need the opinions (of you my readers) as to whether opening links in a new tab/window pisses you off.
I’ve hacked into my theme’s stylesheet again so as to change the color of visited links. Hopefully this would reduce the number of pissed readers who might be landing on the same pages with different anchor texts

Actually, no it doesn’t. I do it myself, but it depends on what I do it for. If I’m linking internally, I don’t do it; if I’m linking to something that will take a person away from my website, then I do it. That’s fair.
Unfortunately I was in the habit of using it on both internal and external link but all that’s gonna change as from today
I’ll only be opening external links in new browser windows.
I bet you’ll find that some people mind about the new tabs / window and some don’t give a damn. They are more concerned about content. For me I prefer links to open new tabs because when you have tons of current reading open in lots of tabs and you go off to make tea or whatever you can forget where you are.
But when a new tab is opened you can finish reading and close that tab and get right back to the original page which usually has other links you want to click to. (I know you can use the back arrow but the point is when you have lots of tabs open you forget). I usually lose track of why I ended up on a new page as the internet has so many distractions, so anything that brings the reader back to you the easiest way is probably the right thing to do. That’s my tuppence worth!
Ps I’m interested as to why people don’t like new tabs or new browser windows opening?
What a coincidence! I love links opening in new tabs for the same reason as you. My attention span is a wonder and I tend to get lost sometimes. The back button doesn’t work sometimes because I think there’ s a limit to how many websites you can revisit using that button.
The only reason I can think of people not liking links to open in new browser windows is because their computers are low on memory or they don’t like browsers windows littering the whole screen
That’s actually one of my dilemmas before launching my blog (links opening in new tab/window), particularly with affiliate links. But I’ve eventually decided to do so, since it will help reduce the site’s exit/bounce rates. I’m pretty much interested with that report’s monetization mistakes. Thanks for sharing this man
I wasn’t really bothered about the bounce rate but rather the time on site but now that I know better
, it’s all about both the bounce rate and time on site. I’d like to go below 50% soon
I had never thought about how important it is to have the visited links change color. That is one of those little mistakes many people might over look. As for opening everthing in a new tab or window, I personally don’t like it. I only like it to open in a new tab or window if it is a link to another site. That way if I am not interested or I am done with that site when I close that window I am still on your site.
Thanks for the tips.
