Weeks back I got an email from Amit Banerjee of Ampercent calling my attention to the fact my blog risked facing duplicate content issue with Google and other search engines because my home page was showing full posts.
He hinted me on implementing the More tag on all my posts so that only like 2 to 3 lines of each post would show on the home page.
I went crazy looking for plugins that could help me achieve this not knowing it was quite a simple thing to do.
As luck would have it my search ended at the Wordpress Support Forum where I got to know of the following.
To insert the more tag in your posts, all you have to do is place your cursor where you want the tag to appear then press Alt + Shift + T or click on the More tag icon as shown below.

In the text area it would appear as in the image below

Now when you publish your posts, only the portion of text above the More Tag will appear on your home page with a link asking your readers to read the rest of the post.
Finally you’re STRONGLY advised to get All In One SEO Pack. It can save you a lot more trouble by placing the noindex attribute on your category, tag and archive pages so you don’t get penalised for having the same content on these pages.
Hope this helps.

Wow! this not only solves the problem of content duplication but also helps you to create heavy traffic for your site. This is simply amazing. Thanks for the share.
the More tag is so helpful to keep from duplicate content issues, and I'm glad that you mentioned it because it took me a while to figure it out on my own.
That is a very smart move in regards to avoiding duplicate content. Plus, by having the more option, you force your users to go further into your site which means you have a better chance of them looking at additional pages you created. Great Job! Great Article.
Thanks everyone for your comments
@ Nick: I was never a HUGE fan of the whole more tag thing. I just did it cos of the duplicate content thing but then I realised that most blogs without the more tag then to have higher loading times than those with the more tag as the main page loads complete posts whic may sometime be irrelevant to what the reader is looking for. With the more tag, I just browse through a blog's front page and choose the one I want to read.
I'm totally with you that readers are forced to go into your site creating the chance that they read more posts.
@ Rob: So far so good all I've heard is that they can move your blog posts to the bottome of search engine rankings and they can also reduce your page rank. Don't know how true that is but it's always good not to test their patience.
