I hated logging into my blog’s admin area to see that I have like 15 comments awaiting moderation but of that 15, 10 are spam messages.
Some in the internet community have advised me to remove the NoFollow Free attribute from blog cos’ according to them that’s what attracts the spammers but if I did so, I wouldn’t be able to reward my loyal commentators.
Thus I made up my mind to look for ways of drastically reducing the spam without hurting my commentators. I already had Akismet installed but still wanted another way of making my blog less spam friendly.
I decided to add a CAPTCHA plug-in and of the 3 plug-ins I found online, SI CAPTCHA was the best cos it fit in nicely with the design of my blog and offered readers a chance to either refresh the captcha image or listen to it.
It’s been a month since I implemented it and the amount of spam comments I’ve received have reduced a LOT.
NOTE: Akismet can sometimes be very aggressive and grab even legit comments but as time goes on it will gradually tune itself to recognize the TRUE spam comments.

yeah , its good that you think a lot about your commentators and take the right decision to install Captcha rather than using Nofollow
@ Gagan From Miami Web Design
I don't seem to understand what you're trying to say but for the record I use CAPTCHA & DO-FOLLOW plug-in. Surprisingly I have received any BOT automated spam since implementing CAPTCHA. How nice!
That's a good decision to moderate spammers.
Captcha's are a great way to keep the bots out, although you need to watch out for the ones that aren't blind accessible. (I currently have this problem)

@ JAB_au, I'm lost with the whole blind accessible thing. Can you explain further? Thanks
I agree. Removing dofollow will probably not help that much. I don't have a dofollow blog. I remove nofollow off any comment I think contributes to the value of the post - general waffle remains nofollow.
I have found the best way to reduce spam is to use JavaScript to add the action attribute to your comment form. In the case of WP, you would also need to change your form's action URI.
David’s last blog post..How to Stop Your WordPress Blog Getting Hacked
Since last week I've been getting lots of spam comments, I really some kind mechanism that would detect a spam comment at the time of posting. I am talking about the human made spam. Could you please suggest a way to filter them out automatically.
KeywordLuv and CommentLuv are such great plugins, it really helps bloggers to gain page ranking. But others are also taking advantage from it and sometimes it is not good already by flooding the blog of nonsense comments. If the blogger have time to moderate and pick only useful and related comments to the topic then I think it would be the best thing to reduce spamming. And to others who are taking advantage of this plugins, be considerate, at least post a comment that is relevant to the topic.
I prefer to use WP SPamFree plugin to avoid spam. It is quite effective.
I really like Akismet and CAPTCHA to reduce spam but it does get irritating when you cant read the CAPTCHA properly
David's suggestion of using Javascript to add the action to a comment form sounds pretty clever. I've never heard of that technique. I'm not sure if I completely understand how it works, though. What action does the user have to perform to dynamically add the action to the form?
It's very hard to reduce or at least to avoid spam comment but if we could have time to at least moderate all the comments in our blog then that would be great. It's just so sad the spammers abused this great plugin.
Thanks everyone for your comments
@ Darek: Try WP Ajax Edit Comments for WP 2.5+. I hear it has that feature enabled.
@ Admin London Escorts: Not to worry, I'll be introducing strict commenting rules. Any comment found wanting will automatically be tagged spam and deleted.
@ Okan: Is it as good as Akismet? Ever since I added an image captcha to my comment form, I've been 99.9% immune to spam. Who knows maybe when my readership increases I might be getting more:( .Till then I'm quite comfortable with Aksimet.
@ Ferret: CAPTCHA on my site seems to load without a hitch & it's quite clear. Doesn't put a strain on the eyes.
@ Udegbunam Chukwudi: I used to receive 25-30 spam comments per day before using WP SPam Free. All are blocked successfully now.
