GTB Naira MasterCard

Of late most banks have started issuing chip and PIN enabled ATM cards in a bid to reduce the amount of ATM fraud which is scourging the nation @ the moment.

If I’m not wrong, EcoBank launched the first ever Naira Credit Card and now GTB has followed suit launching their Naira MasterCard.

GTB’s Naira MasterCard is now issued to every GTB customer both old and new, whether you want it or not. Supposedly the card can function worldwide and online wherever you see the MasterCard logo but before you rush to open an account with GTB because of this card, there are a few things you ought to know.

  1. All local ATM transactions are free ONLY on GTB ATM machines. Other than that, you get to pay the regular 100 naira per transaction.
  2. All international ATM transaction incur a charge of 1,000 naira per transaction.
  3. Despite their claims that it works online, it ONLY works on local internet sites such as Dana Air, British Airways, Fly Aero and a few others.

What irks me the most is that the Customer service reps weren’t aware of the fact that the card didn’t work everywhere online. I spent 2 days battling to renew my domain name with Netfirms while the card kept getting declined.

I finally had to call their card services department before I was told that the card wasn’t fully functional on all websites as I’ve already stated above.

Anyway I guess I’m back to using my Zenith Bank MasterCard Websurfer which fortunately has never failed me ;-) .

I hope you know that the card also has various options, there is the one with dollar payment options, that one might work on other websites, honestly I love GTBank, but have you gone to that bank on any Friday before, it is like we have returned to the days where you go to banks very early in the morning to wait for the bankers, it is terrible! ah, aarg!

    • Yes man. I’m very much aware that they have other payment options in dollar. The purpose of the post was just to show that GTB Naira Mastercard simply doesn’t work online fully. Folks are advised to buy their prepaid Dollar denominated cards.

Here in Sokoto, they open as early as 8.20am and they are always early to attend to customers ;-)

      • Naija Blogger says:

hi thanks for this post. i came across you through google search. I am about to get a dollar-denominated mastercard and i can read here that zenith web surfer is better preffered to GTB naira mastercard. I have been to two Zenith bank branches and was told that web surfer is out of stock and they are not sure when i should come back to check for it. it seems zenith wants to face out web surfer? Has anyone here had similar experience recently? Is therer any other zenith bank dollar-based card that works online? i need help!

  2. lol, Bankers and their ‘no-full-disclosure’ gimmicks. It happened to me when I was getting a MasterCard debit card from my banker. I wasn’t told everything.
I was only told about the good qualities of the card. I later discovered some shortcomings. Those shortcomings were such that I won’t have picked up the card if I was pre-informed about them. So I guess that was why they kept it ‘undisclosed’. ;-)
I can’t imagine paying 1,000naira per transaction as fees. As a blogger that is an unnecessary additional expenditure to a hobby that is already becoming expensive to keep in Nigeria.
I just believed there are better days ahead.

    • One would think that the Dollar version of their Prepaid MasterCard would be better. Say who die? The charges are even a lot more :-(

From reloading fee, to renewal fee to ATM fee to lost card fee to transaction fee etc. The list is endless and that’s why I’ve decided to stick with Zenith Bank’s MasterCard WebSurfer ;-)

  3. Any card that needs to be loaded with USD just to be spent online is a joke. If I was to write about my experiences with 9ja banks, you’d laugh till you cry. Most of them are just glorified thrift collectors and don’t deserve to be called banks.

  4. GTB Naira master card is a joke. My brother wanted to fund his adwords account since i didn’t have cash in my Zenith Web Surfer, i advised him to use his Gtb naira master card. He tried funding the account for days only to be told that it won’t work. Meanwhile, the dollar denomination is a no go area. I got sent 2 mastercards from Payoneer all free. But GTB is telling to pay $70 just for the card. I didn’t even know about the N1000 international charges. I have said it before, these bankers are just trained to rob.

    • $70 just for the card ke? I’m confused. Is the $70 spendable afterwards or does it just cover the cost of the useless plastic? I’ll probably drop by their office to make further inquiries when I’ve got the time.

  5. Ayo says:

    It is nothing but hogwash.

That card is a joke. The most painful thing is the way they deducted N1000 without my consent from my account. Its my money, I should say if I want it taken or not.

The way the 1k was removed made it look like bank robbery to me. In all honesty, I detest the move and the card and the card doesn’t work as promised.

It doesnt work online. I can’t pay my hosting bills, can’t register domains, can’t shop with it – its just another GTB plastic to me – Mind you, I now have like 5 of them. All not working!

    • As it is now, once you put your money in the bank, you’re practically @ their mercy as they can choose to do and undo.
GTB Naira Mastercard was launched in a somewhat annoying “YOU MUST TAKE AND PAY FOR THIS CARD WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT” manner.

  6. Ewealths says:

That is our Naija and as we always say, we go survive!

  7. Aminu Abosede says:

well, well, its good to know that most nigerians are aware of this dubious means these banks used to collect our money. i misplaced the new gtb master card few weeks back and i guess i have to pay another 1000 to pick up a new one. it is so annoying! i really dont trust them as i used to. although i dont like my other bank-sterling, i think i have done more transaction with them in them in the last 3 month.

  8. I think you must have a domiciliary account with them before you can be issue a Mastercard prepaid card in Dollar.

Friday is the most busiest day for GTbank in Lagos, if you see the queue both the paying and receiving cash, there is always queue on Fridays no matter what, some of the branch now assign two cashiers to each cash point on Fridays.

  9. Kolawole says:

Does anyone ever wonder why all these banks declare huge profits every year? It’s all about robbing Peter to (not pay Paul) but themselves.

I live in the UK and recently told my friend in GTD to get a hardware token for me. Oh yes, after all the scanning of forms back and forth, they issued the token then I saw that my account was debited 3k, nowhere in the form was that mentioned. And when I got the so called token, I just laughed.

Anyway, let’s hope better times are ahead.

  10. Kolawole says:

But why do you need to have cash point in a bank for people to queue for if you already have ATMs? Isn’t that the whole purpose of ATMs? So that people can go there in their own time and draw cash 24/7.

  11. bank crier says:

they make sure the atm cards are not working so that they can deduct money from ur bank account, when u cash less than from d counter

    • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

That would be a stupid practice as they would flood the banking hall all in the name of some measly N100 per customer.

  12. Uchenna Gbulie says:

Yeah i noticed the GTB naira mastercard is only accepted on POS and ATM abroad. You cannot use it to shop online, that’s why i went to Standard Chartered and got me a Visa Electron card. It works wonders.

    • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

Thanks for the info man. It’s been over 4 years now since I used a Visa Elecktron card.

    • MAHOGANY says:

Standard chartered Visa Electron Naira card is not internet enabled. Just for ATM and POS tranactions.
Personally i have tried using the gtb naira mastercard to make online payments. for me,the only retailer that accepted the card is TM Lewin ofcourse after you have “passed their security tests”. using the card abroad for POS payment is smooth.
i love gtb full internet banking.you can carry out practically any bank transaction from the comfort of your notebook. i mean just anything including bank transfers to foreign accounts.
gtb dollar VISA debit card is very good for online payments. if you need a card linked your naira account that works anywhere a nigerian card is accepted, try fidelity naira Visa card. foreign merchants seem to be cool with this card.

      • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

Thanks for the info man. I’ll be dropping by their bank to get details of their services + charges ;-)

  13. With continues search, i have been able to use GTB Naira denominated mastercard online for shopping. I can confidently tell you that GTB Naira mastercard is accepted at these websites: vanguardbooks.com
    betterworldbooks.com, mydlstore.com, selftestsoftware.com.

In fact, I discover that marchants that uses 2CO (2checkout) will not have problem in processing the GTB mastercard.

How I wish I did my research before, I would not have anything to do with graphcard.

    • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

I wonder when they will just open the damn thing and scrap that their Dollar denominated card. As always thanks for the feedback.

  14. gbenga says:

I love visiting this site…big up to the mainman here.
plz I want to know if there is any possibility to transfer fund from zenith surfer to my payoneer card, plz how possible is this?

    • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

Thanks man. With regards the transfer of a thing, there’s a possibility it will work BUT remember you ought to receive money from the company that issued the card in the first place before you can start funding it from other sources.

  15. Sam says:

most people claim that the naira mastercard is now fully operational, have you used it recently? if you have then what is your experience like

  16. leo says:

      Try Zenith Mastercard Websurfer: http://www.strictlyonlinebiz.com/blog/the-pros-and-cons-of-mastercard-websurfer-and-graphcard/229/

    • Victor says:

You can make use of GTB visa debit card.(Dollar denominated).you need to have a domiciliary account with them to be able to use visa debit card. It works very well for me because that is what I have been using to pay for my website hosting bills for over a year now.

      • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

Thanks for the comment man. Please how much comission does GTB charge you each time to make a withdrawal or purchase online using the visa card?

  17. Uche says:

Thumbs up. Do keep up the goodwork.

  18. I lost my gtb mastercard, I hope it is easy to get another one back. I will like to get the dollars card as well.

  19. Buzztunde says:

GTB nairamastercard does not work on many major sites including amazon, tried it myself but to no avail…It makes me wonder of what use is the card then if i can’t use it for online transactions. i haven’t tried it on any local sites anyway..
i feel GTB owes it’s customers a right to know what particular sites their card can be used, it would make life a little easier for us

    • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

One of these days I’ll give their card services a call and see what they have to say

    • Does Zenith websurfer, visa card or any card issued by any Nigerian bank?

I have both GTB naira and dollar mastercard and they worked on every website i have used them except amazon.

If anybody has been able to use zenith websurfer or any other card on amazon successfull, please let us know.

      • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

By any chance did you guys contact Zenith when u had issues with Amazon?

      • I have been using my GTB dollar mastercard on Amazon since 2009. Though they did initially decline my payment, I mailed their customer care and they told me to fax them my account details or have GTB do it for me. I forwarded the mail to GTB and they fixed the issue for me.

It’s like that on a host of online stores, once your billing address shows Nigeria, you’ll have to pass through some screening. Like a site I bought iTunes gift card on recently, after payment they told me sent a snapshot of me (my hand) holding my international passport before my order was executed.

BTW, I noticed GTB is charging me like some $5 for every $50 online purchase on my dollar mastercard. What charges are made on the GTB naira mastercard and what is the naira-dollar exchange rate calculation used like?

        • Udegbunam Chukwudi says:

$5 for $50 transactions is too much oh. Go and verify the reason for these charges before they dig a big hole in your pocket. With Zenith Visa Prepaid, it’s like $3 for a minimum of $200 transaction
