Six Facts You Never Knew About Hostgator Shared Web Hosting

Compared to Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting and Dedicated server hosting, shared hosting accounts are relatively cheap and that’s why they are the first choice of many a folk that plan to build a website.

Unfortunately we sometimes focus on the price and features of the hosting package without delving into what really matters.

I’m talking about the web hosting company’s terms of service.

Just like you, I’m guilty of being quick to click "I agree" or "Accept" whenever a terms of condition notice pops up on my mobile phone or laptop computer.

What we fail to realize is that whatever business we are trying to build on the hosting companies servers is bound to be affected by certain rules.

Considering the number of calls/emails I get from folks that want to host with Hostgator, I decided to scrutinize their terms of service for you all so nobody gets caught by surprise like a friend of mine whose website was shut down by Hostgator ’cause it was going through a persistent Denial Of Service attack.

SIX THINGS YOU OUGHT TO KNOW ABOUT HOSTGATOR

Account Ownership: Some of you have contacted me requesting that I should help them pay for their Hostgator subscription because they do not have debit/credit cards.

What you guys don’t know is that according to the TOS, whosoever owns the credit card or PayPal account used to make payment is the LEGAL owner of the account. I don’t know how this clause affects first time payments or subsequent payments or both.

Visa debit cards aren’t that difficult to acquire these days and you can go for MasterCard Websurfer or Visa Prepaid Buxz from Zenith. In fact I even hear that Skye Bank’s Visa Prepaid Card is a lot cheaper than these ones (according to Ibraheem Toyin).

Unlimited Disk Space Catch: if you’ve been around the web for some time, you might have heard that unlimited disk space hosting plans don’t really exist and this is somewhat of true.

Hostgator offers unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth on all their shared hosting plans but this is subject to the amount of inodes you use up on the server.

According to Hostgator, every file (a webpage, image file, email, etc) on your account uses up 1 inode thus once you breach the 250,000 inodes mark on your account, you will be issued a warning and if you don’t heed the warning, you account will be suspended.

To avoid this, you are HIGHLY adviced not to host large files on your server and to make sure that your clean your domain’s email box regularly as each email received or sent is 1 inode.

NOTE: All accounts are backed up weekly in case of a disk failure. If you pass the 100,000 inode limit or use up to 20GB of disk space, you’ll be removed from the Hostgator weekly complimentary backup system.

Refund Policy: By default, you are entitled to a 45 day money back guarantee but if you use any method of payment aside from PayPal and Credit cards, such as Wire Transfers, Western Union Payments, Checks and Money orders, you will not get a refund.

Intense Server Resource Usage: at any given point in time, you must make sure that your website is not making use of 25% or more of your server’s resources for longer than 25 seconds and MySQL queries should not run longer than 15 seconds.

Violating the above rule will affect other sites hosted on your server and thus your account will be suspended till you fix the problem.

For wordpress users, a good way to prevent this is to install W3 Total Cache and research plugins carefully before installing them as some of them are hoggers of server resources.

Also avoid running cron jobs frequently. The minimum interval for cron jobs on Hostgator shared hosting is 15 minutes. I violated this policy recently when I installed the mailing list plugin, Newsletter but Hostgator had it reset without alerting me .

NOTE: sometimes, the over usage of server resources might not be your fault as is the case of my friend, whose site was the victim of a Denial of Service attack.

If you’re unfortunate to be a victim, Hostgator would do its best to mitigate the attack and if they fail, your site will be taken down and you’d be adviced to sign up for a VPS or Dedicated server account.

Mailing Lists Issues: In a bid to reduce our expenses online, some websites run mailing lists using the email system of their hosting companies as its free of charge unlike services like Aweber, MailChimp etc.

Do please note that Hostgator runs a Zero Tolerance Spam Policy and thus is against sending of unsolicited e-mail, bulk emailing, and spam. You MUST only operate a DOUBLE OPT-IN mailing list on their server and you are only allowed to send a maximum of 400 emails per hour.

Any breach of this policy, would lead to the termination of your account!

Forbidden Types of Sites: you cannot host just about any site on Hostgator servers. Investment Sites (FOREX, E-Gold Exchange, Second Life/Linden Exchange, Ponzi, MLM/Pyramid Scheme), Hacker focused sites/archives/programs, Sites promoting illegal activities, Forums and/or websites that distribute or link to warez/pirated/illegal content amongst others are NOT ALLOWED!

To my fellow Nigerians sharing free browsing hacks and what have you, if at any point in time, the mobile networks decide to crack down on such sites, Hostgator will terminate your account INSTANTLY without apology.

When it comes to making money online successfully, there are only 5 major ways to go about it. You either sell your products and services, promote other people’s goods and services and get paid a commission on each successful sale (affiliate marketing), sell ad space or slots on your blog or website or display ads from networks such as Google Adsense, Addynamo , Infolinks etc.

When you are just starting out, finding advertisers for your site can be pretty difficult till you’ve hit like 10,000 page views in a month. With Google Adsense, as soon as you have at least 10 – 20 well written articles, chances of getting into the program are pretty bright and in say 1 week, ads would start displaying on your site.

Analyzing Kothapally Arun’s SEO For WordPress 3.0 Blogs

I’ve been taking a look @ Kothapally Arun’s free e-book Search Engine Optimization for WordPress 3.0 blogs and with over 500 retweets and counting, it seems quite a popular e-book.

I’ll be airing a few opinions of mine with respect to the topics discussed in the report

Step 6 of the report deals with modifying wordpress post title tags. Arun makes a good point that the H1 tag is the most important of all tags in a wordpress theme and thus all post title tags should be enclosed in the H1 tag. This advice suddenly goes wrong when he suggests making the change to the post title tags on your index.php file i.e your blog’s front page.

With the little I know from reading loads of SEO posts especially those by Google’s own Matt Cutts, on a proper wordpress theme, the H1 tag is supposed to be used once on any page. Following Arun’s suggestion, applying the H1 tag to the post title tags on the front page of your blog (index.php) would mean that you’d be having more than one H1 tag on the front page and this is so not ideal for the search engines.

By default the only HI tag on the front page of a wordpress site should be the around the BLOG HEADER ONLY!

If you’re going to change your post title’s tag to H1, it’s recommended you do it on single.php not index.php. Even at that, you’d have to modify your blog header’s tag in such a way that on the front page, it’s enclosed in the H1 tag while on other pages across the site, it has a different tag.

NOTE: Changing your post title’s tag could affect the default design of your post title. You would need skills in editing a stylesheet (style.css) to fix this should such a scenario present itself.

Step 7 is all about setting an Ideal Permalink Structure for your blog.

Arun recommends using the structure http://www.yoursitename.com/year/month/date/postname. It’s a great suggestion but when you take things like making database queries faster and less CPU intensive into consideration, having the post id in the permalink structure is even better. This way, the wordpress system goes straight to the post with the specific post id instead of rummaging through all the posts posted on a particular date so as to find the exact one that belongs to the link that was just clicked.

Here’s my own ideal permalink structure http://www.yoursitename.com/post-name/post-id or http://www.yoursitename.com/post-id/post-name. WordPress’ default permalink uses the post or page-id only and I’m guessing it’s all in a bid to increase performance and speed .

In Step 12 Arun makes a great suggestion about increasing site speed with the use of WP Super Cache plug-in but he does fail to mention that there might be server issues if his settings are used on a shared hosting server.

Please take note that most shared hosting servers don’t support gzip @ all. Here’s Hostgator’s recommended settings for WP Super Cache on their shared hosting plans.

Finally for some reason, Arun is of the opinion that installing wordpress in a subdirectory could bring about duplicate content issues. If for example you install wordpress @ www.yoursite.com/blog, Arun says both www.yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com/blog will display the same content.

That’s quite strange to me as www.strictlyonlinebiz.com and www.strictlyonlinebiz.com/blog are showing different content.

Overall the report makes an excellent SEO read for any wordpress beginner. It’s really worth taking a look at for sure .

I’m quite used to adding the target=”_blank” attribute to my internal links in hope that my readers will stay longer here. I assumed there was no harm in opening a new tab for each post on my blog. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of one ugly truth until now.

Opera 10 and Firefox seem to be the only browsers that open links with target=”_blank” attribute in a new tab. Other browsers such as Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari open such links in a new browser window instead and this can be so frustrating even for ME!

I’m presently looking for a hack to over-ride all my target=”_blank” attributes BUT first I need the opinions (of you my readers) as to whether opening links in a new tab/window pisses you off.

I’ve hacked into my theme’s stylesheet again so as to change the color of visited links. Hopefully this would reduce the number of pissed readers who might be landing on the same pages with different anchor texts .

The Plenty Fishiness Surrounding Austin Azubuike

Disclaimer: Before I proceed, I’d like to make it known that the information contained here are TOTALLY my own views/suspicions and should not be viewed as 100% TRUE. These are just stuff I kinda noticed and would like clarified by Austin Azubuike though he’s averse to approving my comments on his blog.

For quite some time now, there has been rumors flying around that Austin Azubuike is one and the same person as Kenneth Ifeanyi though Austin has publicly admitted buying some of Kenneth’s properties. What I’m yet to establish is how much of Kenneth’s business did Austin actually buy ’cause of recent he stinks a lot of Kenneth Ifeanyi.

The following is an analysis of Austin’s recent Product Launch: “The Most Dangerous Money Making Secret Known In The Universe and How It Accidentally Pulled in N6million+ profit Between January 2010 till date” and it’s attached Free Report.

UPDATE: Austin Azubuike on the 23 of June 2010, shut down the above site and download link. Hmm! I wonder why . If you need the free report, just send an email to madtragicat2030@gmail.com. He has since decided to sell to just his subscribers as shown in this email.

SINCE WHEN HAS AUSTIN AZUBUIKE REALLY BEEN ONLINE?

On both sales copy and free report, Austin claims that his first website, www.nigeria-creditcard.com, has been online for about 3 years now but the WHOIS data associated to that domain says otherwise. It has only been online for 1 year and 4months.

Hmmm! Maybe the WHOIS database has a bug .

WHO TRULY SET UP THE WEBSITE BUSINESSEXPLOITS.com?

Austin claims to have set up a website for himself by the name www.businessexploits.com.

This website according to his sales copy was setup in January 2010. The very second I saw that domain name, my radar went crazy. I “ransacked” the archive of emails I’d gotten from Kenneth Ifeanyi and there it was

In an email sent on the 19th January 2010 with the subject Making Money In 2010…The Easiest Route+FREE report, Kenneth wrote:

Here is a sample of a blog created for a client: www.businessexploits.com
As simple as these blog may look it will soon be earning $10 per day
from adsense alone. It all depends on the traffic that i sent to it.

This left me wondering: If Austin Azubuike has been online for 3 years as he claims and is an expert @ setting up blogs, why in the world, would he be hiring Kenneth Ifeanyi to setup a blog for him?

Also looking @ the WHOIS Database again, Business Exploits was set up in 20 June 2009.

Ah! Maybe he bought the domain name in June 2009 and then 6 months later, he decided it was the right time to set up a blog

IS AUSTIN AZUBUIKE SHARING ONE ADSENSE ACCOUNT WITH KENNETH IFEANYI?

Yet again as soon as I saw a capture of his adsense account, I knew I’d seen it somewhere before. Yep! You guessed right! Kenneth Ifeanyi comes up yet again.

Below is a capture of Kenneth’s adsense earnings from the free report he released early this year (January). Earnings were accrued in less than 3 months.

And here is Austin Azubuike’s earnings for less than 2 months

I’m having a pretty hard time believing that these are two separate accounts and two separate entities. In my opinion, they are both one and the same account. Please draw your own conclusions.

DOES KENNETH IFEANYI WRITE AUSTIN AZUBUIKE’S REPORTS

A quick look @ the properties of Austin Azubuike’s Free report using Adobe Reader 8 brings up Kenneth Ifeanyi’s name one more time.

Three things are certain. Either Kenneth Ifeanyi wrote this report or Austin Azubuike wrote it or Austin Azubuike is the same person as Kenneth Ifeanyi.

HOW AUTHENTIC IS AUSTIN AZUBUIKE’S CLICKBANK CHECK OF $15,794.50?

Austin’s ClickBank Check has got some major fishiness going on

The scan of that check is looking too gritty and edited. The patchy blue-white background leaves more to be desired of this alleged authentic check.
If my eyes are not deceiving me, his name, address and earnings are written in BOLD Times New Roman which all looks computer generated/edited to me.
If I’m not wrong, the Period Ending date: 2010-09-16 does not tally with the date on which I think the check was supposedly issued 20/3/2010. In my own understanding the Period Ending date is meant to come before the check issuance date. I might just be wrong.

Austin Azubuike Needs To Cut The Cr*p NOW!

"Not again! He’s "attacked" KodeSurveys, Facebook Naira and Utiware and Ecash Pro and now he’s taking on Austin Azubuike. When is he going to quit b**ching? Aaargh!"

So where was I? Taking a quote from Austin’s Profit Rake Blog Offer sales page, I said Austin Azubuike needs to cut the cr*p now!

Internet Marketer Austin Azuibike’s mailing list is one of the mailing lists that I "MIRACULOSLY" subscribed to. I’d been following his emails without much attention until he started ranting in one of his emails on 20 May 2010. Funny enough this very email was turned into a blog post as well that same day.

Here’s his rant and my response to it.

It’s 1:10am and i am still much awake.I wasn’t planning to send a mail to all of my subscribers until i saw something that got my attention…

I don’t read MOST of the emails i get,my staff does. If i spend my time reading customers email i won’t be able to build my own online business, like i did this year that brought thousands of dollars and of which i am teaching free like you see in: www.themiss.org

But i just felt like opening one of the dedicated emails today and i saw something that i didn’t really like and that was an email from a customer who was demanding a refund and claiming that i was playing on his intelligence because he paid for his blog since 2-3weeks ago and hasn’t gotten a response yet.

This is what i have to say,if you are still expecting your blog[all t.m.a.c members website are ready and will be sent out today and tomorrow.over],then you either exhibit a level of patience or just kindly demand a refund, period!. I didn’t come to the Nigerian Market to make money from anyone i came to give them money,so requesting your N10,000 or N7,500 doesn’t hurt my account and not by a bit.

This is redundant. The guy is already asking for his refund just pay him the damn N10,000 ($66) or N7,500 ($50) which as you say wouldn’t hurt your account.

How won’t the poor boy be losing his cool? Your sales page NEVER made mention of you taking 1 month to deliver the goods he had paid for. If he had known before hand that it would take that long, he would have had the option to order and wait for all eternity or take his "small" money elsewhere.

BTW how in God’s name are you giving us money, if we are the ones paying big bucks for your services? I’m lost oh!

Now i didn’t say that to be rude,but honestly its painful seeing such mails.

Last month i post over 35 blogs that we have created and sent out and you can see them here: http://profitrake.com/blog/?p=29 between then and now we have created over 120 more!. For God sake do you know what it means to set-up over 150 websites? Register their domain name and host it? Do you know what it means to create a nice looking theme for each blog? Do you know what it means to write 20 articles for each blog!. which means over 3,000 articles have been written and sent out over the period of two months!.

After looking at the blogs you’ve setup, I’ve got to say that if I’m given a steady internet connection and a sick leave from the hospital, I can set up the same amount of blogs as you did in 2 –3 weeks if not less.

You seem to have registered all those blogs in your name. How are your customers supposed to lay claim to their blogs as you seemingly control them because you name is on every one of them?

I know what it means to create a nice looking theme and you haven’t done any of that @ all. All the blogs that I managed to check out from that list of yours were using free wordpress themes easily downloadable by every Tom, Dick and Nnenna.

You claim having written 20 articles for each blog but some of these blogs are just showing wordpress’s default Hello World post .

That is a great feat that not many marketers will dare to face. So if you paid for your blog package either for N10,000 or N7,500 you should exhibit some patience,like i said in my previous emails in the next edition of www.themiss.org i am going to call some people who owns websites that we have created for them and have started making their first dollar.We have a student who has made close to $300 already!.that is five times what he paid for it!.

As i write this i have drafted out a plan to ensure that all members of T.M.A.C earn at least $500 to $2,000 by June if they follow the first assignment they will be given by next week.

Yesterday alone, we personally called more than 100 of our customers and we are going to do that today.

Am saying all that to make a point. At 49,my integrity is more valuable than the N10,000 anybody paid and PLEASE if you feel you cant wait for another 1 week to get your blog that can fetch you money kindly request for a refund!. You simply don’t deserve the effort we have put in. That is the truth.

I’ve also been going through his blog and my archives of past emails from another internet marketer, Kenneth Ifeanyi and boy are there quite a lot of "misinformation" and similarities.

For example in the blog post, 3 Steps To Making $10,000 A Month Online dated 10th of May 2010, he mentioned shutting down his blog offer in 48hrs but till date the page is still there. Hmm. Maybe he relaunched it .

My fellow Nigerians, if you want to make money online, you need to get off your butt and do the heavy lifting.

Please note that I’m not against hiring folks to setup blogs for you BUT there’s a boat load of knowledge you can amass just from learning to do the work yourself from scratch. If I had gone the way of hiring folks to do the work for me, I ain’t so sure this blog would have lasted more than 9 months. With each trial and error, you gather knowledge which makes your blogging better

If you need to hire someone, please make sure the person knows what he or she is talking about. Mr. Austin’s blog which is meant to sell his blog offer is a child’s play. There’s not even an atom of SEO on that blog, which makes me doubt whether he’s getting much search engine traffic, if any @ all.

AcneSpotRemoval which is one of the blog’s on his list has great potential of being banned by Google as the theme used is a spammer for Viagra

The Nigerian Webhosting scene has just gotten another addition to the market, by the name WazoHost Nigeria. The CEO contacted me about 2 weeks ago and asked if I was still entertaining free reviews. As a scheduled paid review had suddenly backed out on our deal, I decided to fill up the void with WazoHost.

This kind of hosting in my opinion is only useful for sales copy/pages or static html websites with bandwidth friendly images. I wouldn’t advice starting a wordpress blog with this kind of hosting for 2 reasons:

50MB can easily be exhausted if you blog heavily and Two:
For one dollar a month, I doubt if WazoHost will be able to offer quality support for issues arising from wordpress. Please note that some web hosts don’t take responsibility for the use of third party softwares/scripts. Feel free to email them about this before ordering.

Going through their terms and condition, there are two important details one has be aware of before placing an order.

Their 30 day refund policy excludes reseller plans, VPS and plans paid for longer than 1 month and accounts that are suspended or terminated for abuse. They can not refund unused portions of your plan. From my own understanding of this clause, if you order for more than 1 month of hosting, you’re not entitled to a refund. I really wonder why this is so.
WazoHost is not responsible for files and/or data residing on your account. You agree to take full responsibility for files and data transferred and to maintain all appropriate backup of files and data stored on WazoHost servers. Unlike hosts such as Hostgator that provide some sort of limited automatic backup of your files, you’re on your own when it comes to preventing data loss on your WazoHost server.

Open Response To Utiware’s Comment/Email Request

After months of waiting for the management of Utiware Web Hosting to tender some form of apology for the bad service I received while trying to host with them last year, they leave a comment and send me an email that’s TOTALLY unexpected.

Here goes their comment/email and my response in bold letters.

I am writing to ask you to delete the above blog post that you posted against Utiware last year. While we understand that your particular communication regarding the installation of WordPress didn’t go well at the time, you have expressed your grievances. You have also received additional information from other Utiware customers who have not experienced the issue that you complained about (not being able to install WordPress). We have numerous customers across Nigeria who use WordPress on our servers. For example, this is a link to the WordPress Blog of Jide Ogunleye, our customer who responded to your post several months ago: http://www.jideogunleye.com/blog/

After 8 months of that post being up, you finally decide to pay attention to my grievances. Your damage control efforts are quite futile and late. Instead of apologizing for the f**kups of your customer care representatives, you give me the impression that my airing my grievances via that blog post = the apology you are supposed to be tendering.

Your customers aren’t complaining because they didn’t have to go through the anguish and lost deadline I did due to logistics from your end. You people just played dumb to my plight probably because it was a measly #3,500 ($22). Your present customers are having a ball hosting with you guys. Well I say good for them. I’m sincerely glad that they are having a better experience than I did.

We understand that at the particular time you were not happy and a negative post like this one might help other people avoid the same issue. But, leaving such negative information on your blog indefinitely is not right, especially since the particular complaint you had is not an issue. You have also copied our Company Logo to your blog. Our Company Logo is copyrighted material and should not be used without our permission.

WTF! Did you just say my complaint is not issue? Humph! I reserve my comments with respect to that. My apologies for using your company logo which as you say is a copyrighted material. I’ve taken it down.

That post was a call for attention to the management, so they would know what their customer service reps were up to. It was NEVER to get people to NOT host with you.

This world is a small place. You don’t know who is reading that blog post and not responding to it, and you don’t know which opportunities you may have lost as a result. Such a negative message can backfire. Utiware is a well loved company. At this point, we ask you to examine why that particular post should still be valid. If the goal was to warn potential customers against signing up with Utiware, then there is no reason for such a message to continue to exist. If the goal was to get back your N3,500, that is not a big deal either. We hope that the goal is not to put up a permanent negative message against Utiware as that will violate all ethical reasons, and greatly undermine your credibility.

Opportunities lost because I aired my grievances about some crappy customer service that I experienced? I do my best to keep it as real as possible and not go about fooling my readers. You can check out my review of Web4Africa which has received an update after I moved to blogger (PatchworkOfTips Moves To Blogger Platform). If the opportunity in question was coming from you guys, I would most definitely pass. I don’t promote companies with whom I’ve had SERIOUS ISSUES! It goes against my own principles.

I sincerely don’t see how that blog post could backfire because right till this very day, there’s no iota of lie in that post. My credibility as a Nigerian blogger remains intact and if that post undermines it, so be it. A mi me da igual!

Please delete the above blog post from your blog and carry on with life without such strong grievances.

This is one of the major problems we have in this country. Companies especially foreign ones like MTN treat us like jerks and nothing is done. For example, you pay for 30 days internet service and the damn network goes AWOL for 28 days and you’re NEVER compensated in any way. The money is gone. Carry on with your life without grievances against the company.

Instead of small businesses like yours, to take the initiative and do something about this "Customer is a fool" trend in Nigeria, you’ve decided to join the big corporations in their hot mess.

I can’t really blame you guys. It’s the government officials that sit down and watch their citizens taken for a ride, that I blame.

Finally I sincerely would have taken this post down if you had apologized and asked politely but getting this kind of response from you, I doubt if this will be happening anytime soon.

My plan is not to ruin business for you guys because with a monthly traffic of just over 2,000 unique visitors and a bounce rate of 66%, I have no influence on the net. The goal is to get you to get your acts together and hire competent customer care reps not the half baked ones like those @ GLO that will argue like mad men to establish their claim that EDGE is faster than 3G and those @ MTN that will tell you BlackBerry can’t be configured for GPRS. What black blondies! (no offense to my blonde readers. Les quiero )
