Most of these newbies, after following all the "rules in the book", still cry out asking why they aren’t reaping enough to show for what they have sown online.

Well allow me to say that, ya’ all need to start looking beyond the whole create high quality content and drive loads of traffic to them recommendations. Those are just tips of the iceberg.

Here are four important things to take note off before you start anticipating huge Google Adsense earnings

The Make Money Online niche sucks:

Most of us probably stumbled on a site that shared tips on making money online via blogging and we quickly decide to create blogs and offer our own advice on making money online. I’m TOTALLY guilty of that but boy am I glad I was quick to realize my mistake .

One thing I failed to realize was that 90% of visitors to make money online sites already knew that I made money via Google Adsense thus they RARELY clicked on ads.

Also the make money online niche pays peanuts per click unless you’re targeting some specific keywords within that niche.

Smart Pricing Is Real:

Google doesn’t really pay the exact amount bidden by an advertiser on an ad. They pay you just a little over 60% of that. Now you may sometimes not get the whole of that 60% if Google feels that click will most likely not end in a sale or a particular action for the advertiser.

This is Smart Pricing in a nutshell.

You’re most likely to be smart priced if the bulk of your traffic is coming from sites like Digg and StumbleUpon. Google pays more for clicks made by search engine visitors since they are more likely to buy than social media visitors thus you’re advised to only show Google Adsense to search engine visitors ONLY.

NOTE: Google Analytics kinda sucks at tracking where Google Adsense clicks came from thus I’ve reverted to showing my adsense to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

Not All Search Engine Traffic Rocks:

I just told you that payouts on clicks made by search engine visitors are the best BUT these clicks aren’t equal in value.

To further reduce the cost of advertising for its advertisers, Google categorizes its traffic into traffic from developed countries and traffic from developing and undeveloped countries.

Developed countries tend to have a higher purchasing power than other countries thus Google pays more for clicks on ads coming from developed countries. If you’re blogging for adsense, make sure your articles are targeted at folks in the US, Canada, UK, France, UAE etc.

Example: Generally clicks from Nigerian search engine traffic make publishers a maximum of 10 cents only and this is not just coming from me but from other Nigerian bloggers who have studied their earnings closely.

Text Ads With Large Fonts + Plenty White Space Work Best

To increase your CTR, the text of your ads must be clear thus I highly recommend you stick to Arial Large as it seems to be the easiest to read. It works best with 336 * 280 ads but is a fail for 728*90 and 468*90 thus I use both of them for image ads only while I leave the former to show but text and images ads.

Just because Google recommends we show our top performing ad slots above the fold, some of us make the colossal mistake of cramming three many ads into that location and subsequently our CTR begins to drop ’cause we’ve inadvertently created ad blindness.

I was guilty of this too and have learnt my lesson ever since.

LESS IS MORE and I’ve discovered that one image ad, one text/image ad and one ad link banner works best in the top fold but then again, this would depend on your site’s layout.

Always endeavor to leave an adequate amount of white space around your ads so your readers don’t just gloss over those places ’cause they make their eyes sore.

Final Words

Google Adsense readily offers a tool called One Click Optimizer for Adsense publishers and I highly recommend, ya’all check it out as it has helped me a lot.

Finally do not forget to add Google Adsense’s crawler to your robots.txt file as it helps to ensure delivery of relevant ads on your site.

Sometime last week I stumbled upon quite an interesting post by lady blogger, Brankica where she outlined how to earn more cash per click on Google Adsense ads by simply applying a legal trick.

Basically it was all about being able to detect which of your blog posts were generating those adsense clicks and then subsequently removing adsense ads from the other posts that weren’t generating clicks @ all. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you go read her article for more details: Make More Money With Google Adsense | Simple Trick Explained.

Brankica was unable to find a plugin to help automate the adsense on some post thingy so the wordpress plugin junkie in me was once again activated and I began a search that ended in my discovery of the beautiful plugin: Advertising Manager.

Using Advertising Manager I was able to restrict my top fold Google Adsense ads to only the category of posts that were earning me adsense clicks.

Here’s how I successfully setup and configured the Advertising Manager Plug-in 

STEP 1: Download, Install and Activate Advertising Manager

UPDATE: For some reason, the plugin has been removed from the wordpress database but you can download the most recent version by clicking here.

STEP 2: Click on Create New under Ads to begin setting up your ads.

Copy and paste your adsense code just the way you’d like it to appear on your blog. Click Import afterwards.

After hitting the import button, you’d be taken to the Edit Settings page for that particular ad.

NOTE: I really don’t advise anyone to set up adsense using the ad format section ’cause you’d be unable to track your ads performance using Channels.

You only have to worry about the Ad title section and Website Display Options.

Set an appropriate title for your ad and then scroll down to the Website Display Options section.

In my case I only edited the category section by specifying my money making categories only.

Once you are done editing, scroll back up and click on Save to return to the Ad Management section as shown below.

SHOW ADVERTISING MANAGER ADS IN YOUR BLOG POSTS

To display the ads in your blog posts you have two options which are to edit you theme’s template or insert a short code into your blog posts.

I went with editing the theme’s template which is single.php to be exact.

Simply place the code <?php advman_ad(‘ad name‘)?> where you want the ad to appear and you’re good to go. Note ad name = the name of your ad just as you created it.

Example: <?php advman_ad(‘Primus Above Post‘)?>

For those interested in showing the ads via short codes, you simply insert [ad#adname] into the post. Note ad name = the name of your ad just as you created it

HOW TO ROTATE ADS WITH ADVERTISING MANAGER

For those interested in showing having their ads in rotation, please note that this plugin by default wasn’t created to do that BUT some bloggers and coders have discovered that if two ads were to have the same name, then the plugin would show either of both ads at random.

If you’d like to rotate a Google Adsense ad and an Affiliate Banner, simply name them Ads and each time the code is called up, one of them will show .

SHOW ADS IN THE SIDEBAR WITH ADVERTISING MANAGER

Displaying your ads in widgets comes very easy. Simply go TO the Widgets section of your wordpress dashboard and drag the Advertisement widget to a location in the sidebar where you want it to appear.

If you’ve got more than one ad set up, select that which you’d like to display in the sidebar, give the widget a title and save

And that’s all there is to setting up and configuring Advertisement Manager plugin.

NOTE: The Advertisement Manager plugin works flawlessly with W3 Total Cache plugin. Just make sure to clear your entire cache after setting up the plugin.

With the help of a friend Dr. Abraham of Nigerian Internet Masters Forum, I was able to create ads that would cost me nothing more than 30 cents per click and thus I launched my advertising campaign with $30.

All was well until I started noticing that my ads were appearing on my sites .

This is an obvious waste of advertising revenue as I’ve got banners on my blogs already promoting the free wordpress setup service thus I set out to block my campaign ads from appearing on my sites.

Here’s how I did it.

1. Log into your Google Adsense account
2. Click on Adsense Setup then Competitive Ad Filter.
3. For each and everyone of these tabs ( Adsense For Content, Adsense For Search, Adsense For Feed and Adsense For Domains), add the Destination or Display URL of your site* for which you created the Google Adwords. Save the changes in each instance and you’re good to go

Destination or Display URL of your site* = if my Google adwords ad, leads whoever clicks on it to www.ezblogsetup.com, this url  becomes the destination url which must be added to the competitive ad filter.

That’s all there is to it. If you ever decide to advertise via Google Adwords and you use Google Adsense on your sites, be sure to apply this trick to avoid losing advertising revenue .

To avoid this smart pricing of a thing, bloggers/webmasters have resorted to showing Adsense ads ONLY to search engine visitors as studies have shown beyond reasonable doubt that regular visitors don’t click on ads. Rather search engine visitors do.

There are plug-ins and codes to achieve this but most of them don’t work with cache plug-ins which are required to speedup wordpress blog load times. A work around using JavaScript has been developed for blogger blogs but is surprisingly valid for wordpress blogs too.

This tutorial is based on how I got Stephen Cronin’s hack/code to work on my blog with W3 Total Cache installed.

NOTE: Please backup your theme files before proceeding. I will not be responsible for any bugs in your site due to following this tutorial to the tee.

Let’s begin.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE SEARCH ENGINE VISITORS ONLY USING JAVASCRIPT

The first step in showing Google Adsense to search engine visitors only is to recognize them using a tiny piece of script which has to be placed in the header of the site/blog.

What this script does is to detect visitors coming from popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo etc and then set a cookie that marks them appropriately. This cookie is by default set to expire after 3600000 milliseconds = 3600seconds = 60 minutes meaning that after 60 minutes, visitors from search engines will quit seeing Adsense ads.

Copy and paste the code into a text file, preferably using NotePad. Change the website address in red to your own domain name and then save the file as searchengineonly.php. Upload the file to the folder of your current theme.

Open header.php and right before the close of the head tag </head>, add the code below

HOW TO CHANGE ADSENSE’S CODE TO LOAD ONLY FOR SEARCH ENGINE VISITORS

Without violating Google Adsense’s policy, your Google Adsense code must take the shape below in order for Google ads to be shown ONLY to search engine visitors.

Take note of the sections in red as you’d have to edit them according to what you have in your default Google Adsense code.

Once you’re done modifying the code to match your default adsense code, copy and paste it wherever you want to display ads and you’re done .

Personally, I pasted the new adsense code into a text file and saved it as adsense.php and added it to my single.php file using the php code below

For section targeting, to work excellently well on Blogger blogs, there’s need to give full access to Google’s adsense bot and some of us are quite clueless on how to achieve this without a robots.txt file.

A quick and easy fix to this is to add a meta tag to the template. I modified Gaurav Akrani’s Duplicate Content Cure to achieve this.

The above code is embedded immediately before the tag <b:skin> in your blogger template and it’s functioning is to prevent the search engine bots from indexing your blogger blog’s home and archive pages while @ the same time allowing Google Adsense bots crawl the entirety of your blogger blog.

It’s a way of evading Google’s duplicate content penalty while showing relevant adsense ads on blogger blogs .

After so many clicks here and there accompanied by google searches, I figured it out on my own.

Log on to your Google Analytics account, select your profile/site and click on View report.

This will open your dashboard where you can see maps pertaining to Site Usage, Visitors Overview, Map Overlay, Traffic Sources Overview and Content Overview.

Go straight to the sidebar at the left hand corner of the screen and click on Content. The drop down menu shown below will appear after the page reloads

Click on Adsense. The page reloads again showing your an overview of your Adsense Stats. From there, you can navigate to view your Top Adsense Content, Top Adsense Referrers, Adsense Trending etc.

P.S: Linking your Google Adsense To Google Analytics is quite easy. Simply pay attention to the top fold of Google Adsense account each time you log-in to view your earnings. At some point time, you’ll be given an option to link your accounts together, seize the opportunity, follow the simple instructions and your account will be linked in no time.

Note: Google Adsense data will take some time before it appears in your Google Analytics dashboard.

But did you know that bad guys could get a hold of your adsense script code (Don’t ask me how cos I’m still puzzled after getting wind of this 2 weeks ago) and paste it on any forbidden site and when Google Adsense gets wind of this, your account will be automatically FROZEN!

Do yourself a favor a use the Allowed Sites feature in your adsense account before it’s too late. This feature can be found under Adsense Setup as shown below:

Using this feature, you can specify which sites are allowed to display Google Adsense ads for your account.

Simply click on the second radio button that says “Only allow certain sites to show ads for my account” and then in the box that appears beneath fill in the sites that you want to show ads for your account.

Be sure to read the examples on the page carefully so as to get what you ACTUALLY want from this feature.

When you are done filling in your list of allowed sites, Save changes and that’s all. Your Google account has been protected from the bad guys.

Ever since I implemented the list I got from Ads Black List, I’ve been experiencing the following problems on my blog.

1. Too many blank ad spaces on my blog.
2. Not even a single click on the ads that Adsense manages to deliver.

It’s as though included in the Ads Black list generated list of MFA sites are basically 80% of the sites from which Google serves ads to my blog.

I’ve since decided to end the use of the competitive filter feature and hopefully I’ll be back to getting those precious clicks and cents/dollars per click.

Step1

Simply log into your Google Analytics account and create the ad you want to display on your Blogger blog. Copy the code and make it compatible with Blogger by using Postable.

In postable all you have to do is paste the adsense code then click on make it friendly and the code will be automatically transformed to one that’s compatible with blogger.

Step 2

Open notepad and paste your modified Google adsense code. Now before this code paste <b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;’> and immediately after the code paste </b:if>.

The idea is for your code to appear like this

<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;’>
Modified Adsense Code here
</b:if>

By placing the modified adsense code between the green pieces of code, your adsense ads will ONLY be visible when you visit a blog post. Your ads will NEVER appear on the home page.

Step 3

Simply log into your Blogger dashboard and click on Layout.

Under Layout select Edit Html.

When the HTML editing page opens, back up your template by clicking on Download Full Template.

With that out of the way, click on expand widget templates and wait for the page to reload.

Now search for the code: <data:post.body/>.

If you want your ad to appear before your post, you must paste the adsense code before this code and if you want your ad to appear after the post, you must paste the adsense code after this code.

Save your template and you’re good to go. Simply check a post on your blog to see this action.
