Cheap Alternative To Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard Debit Card

If you don’t live in the US, can’t receive checks reliably in your country and you work for online companies such as Elance, Odesk and 2CheckOut, you’d most probably be aware of Payoneer’s Prepaid MasterCard Debit Card which is how these companies pay folks like you.

With ties to Choice Bank Limited in the US, Payoneer debit cards are designed as an online payment solution offered to organizations to enable them send funds to remote employees without a fuss.

Recently I’ve noticed a trend where people go out of their way to own a Payoneer MasterCard simply for transacting online not paying much attention to the somewhat astronomical fees they are about to incur.

If you’re in the market for a regular debit card for offline and online transactions only, there exists a few cheap alternatives to Payoneer that you’re probably yet to discover.

Forget the notion that a debit card generated by a US bank is more widely accepted online. It’s just a fallacy ’cause personally I’ve made online purchases using two debit cards issued by a Nigerian bank ( Zenith Bank’s Visa Prepaid Buxz Debit Card and MasterCard WebSurfer ) and 98 percent of these transactions went through without a hitch at all.

In the next few paragraphs, I’ll be showing how you can save a fortune by simply acquiring a regular debit MasterCard or Visa Prepaid card from your local bank.

NOTE: The cheap MasterCard alternative in this article is none other than the non-personalized Visa Prepaid Buxz offered by Zenith Bank Nigeria PLC.

Let’s begin:

Card to card fund transfers: With both cards you have the amazing option of receiving money from anywhere in the world from another Visa or MasterCard owner. This kind of transaction carries a minimum fee. The fund transfer initiator or you the receiver is subject to 3.75% charge if using Payoneer’s MasterCard while with Zenith Visa Prepaid a flat fee of $5 applies only irrespective of amount transferred.
Online Payments charges: a minimum of $2 is charged by Zenith Bank per online or POS terminal transaction with a maximum of 1.5%. Payoneer ain’t so clear on this but giving this clause on their site that states thus ** When a Purchase Transaction or ATM Withdrawal is requested, up to 3% above market rate will be assessed based on current foreign exchange rates.*, I’m guessing a 3% fee applies.
ATM Withdrawals: just like online payment charges above, Payoneer ain’t so clear on this either and my deductions say they charge $2.15 + maximum of 3% per withdrawal. Visa Prepaid by Zenith charges 2%, 2.5% or 3.5% depending on if it’s a US, Local or International ATM withdrawal.
Monthly Maintenance Fee: I don’t make purchases frequently online. Aside from the occasional purchase off BlackBerry Appworld, Singing Success, etc my main online purchases at the moment are my Netfirms and Hostgator bills which come around once a year. I don’t pay maintenance fees on my Buxz card but with Payoneer you could end up paying as much as $3 a month if you make less than 5 transactions a month and still maintain funds in your account. Imagine being charged for not making a purchase. Ouch!

Transacting with Zenith Bank’s Visa Prepaid only costs you more when you want to load funds to your card over the counter or renew your card as they charge $3 and $7 more respectively compared to Payoneer.

The info above is provided to educate you a little on what charges you are subject to should you become a proud owner of a Nigerian Visa Prepaid card or Payoneer Debit MasterCard.

Buying a prepaid MasterCard card be it in the US or Nigeria ain’t so difficult as there are even companies like Payoneer that are giving them away for free via selected partners like 2CheckOut and FreeLancer.

Applying for a MasterCard from LimeExchange was the subject of a past post on this blog but LimeExchange has been taken over by Freelancer thus the tutorial is no longer valid and thus I’ve decided to show ya’all other means of getting legit MasterCards for online shopping etc.

A Quick Look At Zenith Bank’s Visa Prepaid Buxz Debit Card

It’s common knowledge that Nigerian banks now offer credit-debit cards that can be used for online transactions.

For over 2 years now, I’ve stuck by Zenith Bank as my choice when it comes to online transactions ’cause they are always to ready to help whenever I hit a roadblock .

Months back my Zenith Bank issued MasterCard Websurfer expired and I was given the chance to get a new one or go for a different card. I chose to go with their Visa Prepaid Buxz which like the Websurfer cost me just $120 of which I could only spend $100 as $20 was deducted as yearly card fees which is common practice even overseas.

In the next few paragraphs, I shall be detailing the requirements, pros and cons of Zenith’s Visa Prepaid Buxz debit card.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ZENITH BANK VISA PREPAID BUXZ DEBIT CARD

A Driver’s license, National ID Card or International Passport.
Utility Bill: PHCN/NEPA, Water bill etc.
3 Passport photographs.
Minimum of $120 USD

On providing the above requirements, you’ll be given a form to quickly fill out there and then in the bank and you’d be asked if you want a generic Buxz card or a personalized one. The personalized one comes with your name embossed on the card while the generic one doesn’t. I personally went for the generic one ’cause I didn’t want to suffer any delays as the card had to be sent from Sokoto to Lagos for the embossing to be effectuated.

Personalizing your card adds an extra layer of security to your card.

You walk up to the cashier, make your payment of $120 and your card is given to you with instructions that it would be activated after 24 hours.

NOTE: You’ll be charged $5 only each time you reload your card and you’d be needing a Visa tele-banking PIN to enable you check your balance or withdraw funds at ATMs worldwide and in Nigeria.

BENEFITS OF SHOPPING ONLINE WITH ZENITH BANK’S VISA PREPAID BUXZ

Works seamlessly with every site I’ve tried it on. Even when I have issues making orders, a quick call to Zenith Bank’s card services on 012781740 takes care of everything (Dem no dey joke with their customer service .
Comes with Visa tele-banking which enables you to check your balance @ ATMs worldwide and online. It also allows you to perform a load of transactions too. To activate Zenith Bank’s Visa Tele-Banking, simply call Card services on 012781740. Of the numbers they’ve got for card services, this is the one that always goes through for me. Depending on your location, your tele-banking PIN might take up to 3 weeks to arrive.
Your family and friends anywhere in the world can send you money directly from their credit-debit cards to your Zenith Visa Prepaid without the need of Western Union, MoneyGram and others.

CONS OF SHOPPING ONLINE WITH ZENITH BANK’S VISA PREPAID BUXZ

Some of you might have noticed that Zenith’s Visa Prepaid debit card offers a boat load of functions unlike the MasterCard Websurfer. As is expected, these extra functions come at a price!

There is a transaction fee on every transaction you do. The fee is 1.5% of the transaction amount or a minimum of $3 which ever is higher. This $3 deductions will appear on your online statement as PUR Advance Fee-(International) and the sad thing is even if you get a refund on any transaction you carry out, this $3 is NEVER refunded.

What this means is that for every order under $200 even if it’s just $1, you’ll be charged a whooping $3. Orders above $200 will cost you 1.5% of the transaction fee. Example for an order of $300 USD, you’ll be charged $4.50.

For Nigerians, buying things online was quite difficult in the beginning ’cause of the whole myth that "Nigerians are the world’s greatest scammers". Our only option then were virtual credit cards linked to US, UK or European addresses plus the use of IP changers.

Over time, the Nigerian banking industry has stepped in to help make things a lot easier for us by introducing internationally accepted Visa/MasterCard debit cards like the Zenith MasterCard Websurfer and the Zenith Visa Prepaid Buzx (which I’ll be blogging about soon).

Despite the introduction of these valid Nigerian credit/debit cards, folks still go for the virtual ones thus my wanting to share with you all the benefits of having a physical Nigerian generated debit card rather than a virtual card.

TOP FOUR ADVANTAGES A PHYSICAL DEBIT CARD HAS OVER A VIRTUAL ONE

Cost: Generally most debit Visa-MasterCards offered in Nigeria have a minimum of $120 opening balance of which $20 is for annual card fees while the remaining $100 is for spending. Depending on the value of the card you wish to acquire, the cost of generating a virtual debit card could go as high as over N500 to $1 while the physical ones will cost you whatever is the current exchange rate in the market; almost never breaching N160 to $1. You could most definitely spend more with the Physical cards. Do the maths. Need I say more?
Support: whenever you have issues with your physical debit card, such as refunds, chargebacks or declined orders, you can always run to the bank to resolve the matter for you as fast as possible. In my personal experience, once a virtual credit card has been generated, you’re practically on your own as emails to support go unanswered as was my case and that of a friend with GraphCard. Whenever I had an issue with my Websurfer and Visa Prepaid, the folks at Zenith’s Card Services have always been available to fix things quickly.
Reloadable feature: Unlike physical debit cards, a good percentage of virtual cards can not be reloaded and thus cost even more. Reloading a physical card could cost you just $5 while in the instance of a virtual debit card, you’d have no option but to pay the entire fee for a brand new card.
Offline Use: With a physical debit card, you can easily withdraw your funds from ATMs that carry the MasterCard or Visa logo but with the virtual ones, you’re restricted to online transactions ONLY!

Virtual debit – credit cards only come in handy when you want to order stuff from ClickBank, open an illegal PayPal account or make a purchase at a site that does not entertain debit cards with Nigerian addresses.

How To Fund Your LimeExchange Payoneer MasterCard

With the recent announcement of LimeExchange.com shutting down in a few weeks time (December 24th 2010 to be precise), there seems to be some sort of panic spreading amongst folks who had obtained a Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard via LimeExchange.

I took the liberty of contacting the folks @ Payoneer regarding the situation considering the fact that Payoneer MasterCards cannot be used until they’ve been funded via the partner through which the card had been issued.

Good morning Sir, My card was acquired via LimeExchange and they’ve suddenly decided to go out of business. I’ve not received a single payment from them and now I’m wondering what’s going to become of my card. How do I fund it now? Hope to hear from you soon. Have a wonderful day .

I got the following reply the next day

Dear Chukwudi,
Thank you for contacting us.
You can either work with a different partner which is associated with us, and then link the card to him in order to get payouts from the partner, furthermore you can load the card using a Visa or a MasterCard, this is how its done:
To load money onto your Prepaid MasterCard®, please use the following steps:
Go to www.payoneer.com
Press Load Money
Enter the Cardholder’s e-mail address
Choose the payment method you wish to use
Follow the instructions to enter all requested information
Press Continue to complete the load
Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Coincidentally, a few days before LimeExchange had announced their shutting down, I had linked my own Payoneer MasterCard to my 2CheckOut account and the next day after Payoneer had replied my email, I got this payment notification from 2CheckOut:

After pressing the continue button, I chose the option to have the funds loaded in my card after 3 business days and true to their words, Payoneer loaded my account 3 business days later .

Below is a break down of charges made to my Payoneer MasterCard immediately after it was funded.

WARNING: To other Payoneer Partner cardholders, do please be wary of claims about funding “virgin” payoneer mastercards via LibertyReserve ’cause from what I hear from Payoneer, this IS NOT POSSIBLE until you’ve received money from the Payoneer partner that issued the card to you.

I even tested this claim about 1 week and 3 days ago by trying to transfer money to my card from my Zenith Bank Visa Prepaid and it was declined.

Below is the message, I got from Payoneer:

CONCLUSION: To all of you who own a LimeExchange generated Payoneer MasterCard, you can fund it by either signing up with another Payoneer Partner like 2CheckOut, Odesk, AvaFX and Elance. You can also transfer funds from another credit/debit card to your Limeexchange Payoneer MasterCard.

Too Much Ado About GTB Naira MasterCard

Of late most banks have started issuing chip and PIN enabled ATM cards in a bid to reduce the amount of ATM fraud which is scourging the nation @ the moment.

If I’m not wrong, EcoBank launched the first ever Naira Credit Card and now GTB has followed suit launching their Naira MasterCard.

GTB’s Naira MasterCard is now issued to every GTB customer both old and new, whether you want it or not. Supposedly the card can function worldwide and online wherever you see the MasterCard logo but before you rush to open an account with GTB because of this card, there are a few things you ought to know.

All local ATM transactions are free ONLY on GTB ATM machines. Other than that, you get to pay the regular 100 naira per transaction.
All international ATM transaction incur a charge of 1,000 naira per transaction.
Despite their claims that it works online, it ONLY works on local internet sites such as Dana Air, British Airways, Fly Aero and a few others.

What irks me the most is that the Customer service reps weren’t aware of the fact that the card didn’t work everywhere online. I spent 2 days battling to renew my domain name with Netfirms while the card kept getting declined.

I finally had to call their card services department before I was told that the card wasn’t fully functional on all websites as I’ve already stated above.

Anyway I guess I’m back to using my Zenith Bank MasterCard Websurfer which fortunately has never failed me .

Quick Note On Payoneer Billing Address Issues

This is going be another one of my "quickie" posts .

I’ve noticed that some folks are having issues when placing online orders with their Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard and I want to make something clear.

When you’re placing an order online and your billing address is requested, make sure you fill in the address under which your Payoneer MasterCard was issued.

For example, if you’re a Nigerian living in Nigeria and you ordered the card using your Nigerian home address, your Payoneer billing address automatically becomes your Nigerian home address. If you fill in anything other than this, your order might be declined depending on the security measures being used by the payment processor of the site in particular.

How To Fund Your Paypal and Payoner Prepaid Mastercard

After the whole update on PayPal verification issues and how to order payoneer mastercard via Limeexchange, Henry Omenogor went on to to discuss another problem some Nigerians were facing which is how to deposit and withdraw funds from their PayPal accounts and Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard.

HOW TO FUND AND WITHDRAW FROM A PAYPAL ACCOUNT IN NIGERIA

The only solution here is buying and selling between two PayPal account owners. Here’s how the scenario goes:

Person A has got $100 in his account and wants to withdraw it badly. Person B needs $100 in his PayPal account so he can pay for some goods online. Person B approaches Person A and offers to pay him the equivalent of his $100 in local/foreign currency and in return Person A transfers the $100 in his account to Person B’s account.

A deal is struck and in the end Person A has successfully withdrawn the $100 in his account while Person B has successfully funded his account with $100 and can now proceed to shop online. Deal closed.

UPDATE: For a 50% commission, Mr. Henry Omenogor can help you cash your PayPal in Naira within 72 hours. For example, if you want to withdraw $100, you’ll be given $50 multiplied by the exchange rate @ that point in time.

Don’t ask me why such a seemingly exorbitant commission ‘cause I don’t know.

HOW TO FUND YOUR PAYONEER PREPAID DEBIT MASTERCARD WHILE IN NIGERIA

According to Henry, adding money into your Payoneer Prepaid Mastercard can be done in three ways.

By transferring funds from another Visa/MasterCard into your card or from a Nigerian bank to your account in the US.
By contacting him (I don’t know how much commission he charges on this one)
By making money into your Payoneer card. This requires your partnering with firms that offer jobs etc and pay via Payoneer such as the few shown below.

HOW TO WITHDRAW FROM PAYONEER PREPAID MASTERCARD IN NIGERIA

You can withdraw your funds @ ATM machines owned by Zenith Bank and EcoBank. Never make the mistake of slotting your card into the machine when you don’t have funds within. You card will be seized .

Another alternative to withdrawing the funds in your card is to shop with it.

PRECAUTION WHILE SHOPPING ONLINE WITH PAYONEER MASTERCARD

Your billing address must be the same one with which you signed up for the card. Otherwise your order will be flagged or rejected.

So there you have it; a few tips on funding and withdrawing money form your PayPal accounts and Prepaid Mastercard.

Some of you might have read and loved my previous post, Nigerians Get Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard Free! but this post promises to be better as it serves as a detailed guide to placing an order for the Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard via Lime Exchange.

HOW TO APPLY FOR LIME EXCHANGE PAYONEER PREPAID MASTERCARD

Point your web browser @ Lime Exchange and click on Register for Free @ the top right corner of the home page

Fill in the form as shown below

If your sign up was a success, you’ll be taken to the page below where you have to fill in the verification code sent to you via email. You’re also given the choice of just clicking on a link within the confirmation email.

As soon as you’ve confirmed your registration, scroll down the next page and click on Continue to profile as shown in the image below.

At the top right hand corner, click on Payments then Withdraw funds

Select the Prepaid MasterCard option. Click on Please click here to proceed and then Please click here to get your card now.

On the next page, you’ll be connected to the Payoneer website. Click on any of the two options shown below to begin registering for a card.

Step One involves filling in your Cardholder Details.

NOTE: Make sure you fill in your correct Zip Code. You can get your own post code @ Nigeria Post Codes.

Step Two deals with your Card Account Information. Be sure to memorize your secret question and answer as it would come in handy whenever you have problems with your account in the future

The third step requires a form of ID (International Passport, Driver’s License or National ID). Tick all three options as shown below then click on finish.

That’s all folks! According to the final email notification, all things being equal, you can expect to receive your Payoneer Mastercard in 25 working days.

UPDATE: I got an email from Payoneer 2 days after I registered for the card requesting for a scanned copy of the method of identification which I had used above. This was required before my application could be fully accepted and processed.

I sent in a scanned copy of my International passport and as the time of this post being written, I was still awaiting a confirmation from Payoneer.
