While writing Monday’s post on How To Add Nofollow To Wordpress Tags and Tag Cloud , I discovered a feature of YouTube videos that’s quite useful to folks like me who sometimes find themselves browsing on a slow internet connection or restricted monthly bandwidth.

This feature is called Interactive Script and can be seen in action @ Do Tag Clouds Help Or Hinder SEO?. Unfortunately it’s not available for every YouTube video.

How To Add Nofollow To Wordpress Tags and Tag Cloud

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi Under Wordpress Plug-ins On August 30, 2010 13 COMMENTS

Wordpress tag links and tag clouds. To use or not to use. The debate continues. Most SEO guys are of the opinion that the probability of being penalized by Google increases when wordpress tag clouds are added to a blog/site.

Here’s what Google’s Matt Cutts has to say about the use of tags and tag clouds.

Personally I need my tags as I don’t have time to set keywords for each and every blog post so I rely on All In One SEO to turn my tags into keywords.

In other to keep the Big G happy, I decided to look for a way of adding the nofollow attribute to ALL my tag links including those within a cloud and I stumbled on Kaf Oseo’s Nofollow Tag Cloud.

StrictlyOnlineBiz Top Blog Posts Of The Week 25

I ain’t looking forward to this weekend @ all as I’ve got to work but it will be a nice surprise if the Trauma Center stays quiet throughout my shift ;-)

Are you one of Kenneth Ifeanyi – Austin Azubuike’s victims? Smart B has launched a crusade to hunt him down. Seems like he knows the guy’s home address in Lagos.

When starting a new blog, some of us worry about coming across as experts in our niche so that we can garner loyal readers. Murray Lunn shows us just that in his post: How To Become An Expert: A Simple 3 Step Guide.

The Google team contacted Harsh Agrawal and let him know that he could make more money via Adsense by slapping on more adsense ads on his blog: Google Adsense Team started Sending Optimization Tips. This TOTALLY destroys the myth that adding more than 1 Adsense unit to a blog can be detrimental.

Following this news, I’ve added one ad unit below every post and one ad unit in my sidebar. I’ll continue showing adsense @ the top of my blog posts ONLY to search engine visitors. If you don’t know how to do that, check out: Show Adsense To Search Engine Visitors With JavaScript (W3 Total Cache Compatible).

Rescue Non-Spam Comments With Conditional CAPTCHA

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi Under Wordpress Plug-ins On August 23, 2010 9 COMMENTS

Whether we all agree or not, Akismet till dates remains the best anti-spam plug-in for Wordpress blogs. If you’re in doubt all you have to do is deactivate Akismet and try any other anti-spam plug-in on it’s own and you’d note a surge in spam like never before.

Most Captcha plug-ins fail when used in combination with WordPress cache plug-ins such as W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache and they can’t be trusted to work on their own either.

One of Akismet’s UGLIEST features is its white/blank page of horror which it throws up whenever it feels a comment is spammy is nature. This white/blank page of horror can be quite frustrating for commenters who have left lengthy comments as those comments are in most cases lost once the blank page surfaces.

Depending on how the blog author has configured Akismet, comments that trigger the blank page are either deleted entirely from the blog’s system or are stored in the spam folder for moderation. If the blog author is a busy person or just has an aversion for checking his spam folder, you can kiss any of your legit comments which lands in the spam folder, goodbye.

I implore all wordpress blog owners to PLEASE READ: Red Alert! Akismet Might Be Deleting Your Comments ASAP!

Conditional CAPTCHA for WordPress comes to the rescue of legit comments taking advantage of Akismet’s blank page of horror and making it useful to both the blogger and his commenters ;-) .

Here’s how it works and how it can help you save those legit comments and reduce those spammy comments to the barest minimum ;-) .

StrictlyOnlineBiz’s Top Blog Posts Of The Week 24

SCAM ALERT!!: Emmanuel Samson’s ECashPro which was previously been promoted via email has finally been launched online but with a brand new name: Atomizer and with a brand new author: Professor Jerry David. Thanks to one of my readers, Ola, for pointing me @ the site.

Whatever you do, THOU MUST NOT FALL VICTIM OF THAT SITE!

Web Hosts especially Nigerian web hosts should be very carefully who they "rent" their servers to ’cause you all owe a responsibility to the public, to prevent them from falling victims of scams such as the Fraudulent Interswitch website @ BroadNigeria. I’m aware it can be a tasking effort to monitor all websites on your servers BUT at least do please TRY a little.

Did I forget to mention that these spammers/scammers could ruin search engine rankings for your customers who are also sharing the same server as they are?

The campaign against PayPal keeps growing each day especially when digital goods and services are involved. Alex blogs about his experience with HostICan where PayPal didn’t do jack to help matters @ all: Beware Of HostICan Hosting.

Blogging At A Glance With Karo Itoje

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi Under Reviews On August 18, 2010 8 COMMENTS

Blogging At A GlanceIf someone where to ask me right now, what exactly blogging was all about, I’m almost 100% sure that I would look clueless for a while before trying to explain what it’s really about.

Don’t get me wrong. I KNOW what blogging is all about but my problem is I don’t really know how to explain to a TOTAL newbie what it entails and how they can really stick to it and make a success of it.

According to BBC’s Ask Bruce, Blogging is a way of collecting links to web pages and sharing thoughts and ideas with people online.

For the guys are Tech-Faq, when one writes a web log and maintains it by adding or removing entries that is called blogging.

If you’re still somewhat of lost, not to worry, Karo Itoje of Blogging – The Beginner’s Complete Guide, has just written her very first e-book which rips into the whole blogging thing ;-) .

Analyzing Kothapally Arun’s SEO For Wordpress 3.0 Blogs

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi Under Reviews On August 16, 2010 5 COMMENTS

Search Engine Optimization for Wordpress 3.0 Blogs

I’ve been taking a look @ Kothapally Arun’s free e-book Search Engine Optimization for Wordpress 3.0 blogs and with over 500 retweets and counting, it seems quite a popular e-book.

I’ll be airing a few opinions of mine with respect to the topics discussed in the report

Step 6 of the report deals with modifying wordpress post title tags. Arun makes a good point that the H1 tag is the most important of all tags in a wordpress theme and thus all post title tags should be enclosed in the H1 tag.  This advice suddenly goes wrong when he suggests making the change to the post title tags on your index.php file i.e your blog’s front page.

With the little I know from reading loads of SEO posts especially those by Google’s own Matt Cutts, on a proper wordpress theme, the H1 tag is supposed to be used once on any page. Following Arun’s suggestion, applying the H1 tag to the post title tags on the front page of your blog (index.php) would mean that you’d be having more than one H1 tag on the front page and this is so not ideal for the search engines.

By default the only HI tag on the front page of a wordpress site should be the around the BLOG HEADER ONLY!

StrictlyOnlineBiz’s Top Blog Post Of The Week 23

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi Under Hot Posts On August 13, 2010 11 COMMENTS

Over the weekend, I had a lil’ business meeting with one of Nigeria’s young entrepreneur, Ahmad Mukoshy about the possibility of a collaboration between EzBlogSetup and Aimtech Nigeria Hosting. The meeting ended on a good note with the terms that EzBlogSetup’s services will be included to Aimtech Nigeria’s shopping cart as an add-on service @ a discount of 25%.

What this means is that folks ordering hosting from Aimtech Nigeria have the option of hiring the services of EzBlogSetup for 25% less than the normal selling price of $30 (N4,000).

NOTE: The Aimtech Nigeria Hosting + EzBlogSetup offer is open to Nigerians ONLY for now!

In the mean time, EzBlogSetup was given a facelift design wise and is now open to International customers as well, thus the reason why the ad banners around the net now are showing the dollar value of the service which is $30 ;-) .

When I launched StrictlyOnlineBiz back in February 2009, I signed up for a 2CheckOut merchant account for a one time fee of $49 but I never got to use it as I wasn’t successful in coming up with a proper product to sell. By default, 2CheckOut only allows one URL per account and any change to the URL costs $19.

In my case, probably because I haven’t made a sale on the account, 2CheckOut waived the $19 fee and changed my URL for FREE so I can now accept Credit Card/PayPal payments @ EzBlogSetup ;-) .

A big thank you to the guys @ 2CheckOut for been so understanding ;-) .

Here’s another reminder. The Free Blog Setup Services For Five offer is still on. Please kindly assist me in spreading the word via retweets, emails etc. I’d TOTALLY appreciate the gesture ;-) .

Some folks as still having doubts as to which WordPress cache plug-in is the best. Kyle Robinson Young reviews the most popular caching solutions for wordpress in his blog post; WordPress Caching: What’s the best Caching Plugin?

How To Add A Floating Bookmarks Panel To Your Blog

Posted by Udegbunam Chukwudi Under Wordpress Plug-ins On August 11, 2010 10 COMMENTS

In one of my weekly top blog posts round up, I raved about the stunning Smart Sharing plug-in by the folks @ WpBeginner. This plug-in made it possible to add a floating social media bookmark panel to the side of your wordpress blog’s theme making it easier for your readers to bookmark and share your posts.

Floating Bookmark Box

I was in love with it, until, I casually navigated the mobile version of this site and discovered that the floating panel was now floating over my content thus making it impossible for mobile visitors to read my blog posts.

I uninstalled the plug-in @ once and started looking for ways to implement it’s function within the desktop theme of my blog ONLY! After reading How To Create A Sexy Vertical Sliding Panel Using jQuery And CSS3 and Fixed Social Icons on the Side of Whole Site, I created my own floating bookmarks box and here’s how I managed it.
